All of the News and Gossip that is Unfit to PrintAugust 24, 2002Yet again!Think Racing continues its winning streak taking its sixth consecutive race win. Despite the extra competitive field of a Team Cup race, no one has been able to break the Think Racing strangle hold. With their routine down pat, Think Racing held the peloton together for another field sprint, leading their sprinter, Leon Moser past ReMax's bulky sprinter Anthony Allesio, to victory.
August 17, 2002 Team Time Trial
The surprise of the day was MoneyGram (Rob Gray, Eddie Espitia, Salvatore Abbruzzese, Ruben Dario Hurtado). Tearing through the last 10km lap with a time of 13:10, they were the only men squad to improve upon their time on the last lap--an astonishing 24 seconds faster at that! With this final surge, MoneyGram shot into fifth place, 49 seconds slower than ReMax. RACE NOTES: Miya Shoji's team time trial squad of one man, Xavier Melendez, put in a great effort to finish with a time of 41:07 (average speed 43.78kph) placing him in 7th overall!
August 3, 2002 Chann McRace, Mike McCarthy, Nelson Vails, in a club race?It was no ordinary club race, as current US PRO champion Chann McRae, Mike McCarthy, and Nelson Vails lined up on top of Cat's Paw hill. Mike had won countless national titles, a world title and is a two-time Olympian. Nelson Vails won an Olympic medal. Apparently they were all in town for the NYC Cycling Championship. Chann looked lean, while Mike and Nelson did not look so lean. It would be a points race this morning. Top three get points every lap, with double points for the last lap. The race started fast and stayed that way. Mike McCarthy launched a few attacks as did Chann McRae, but the story was a similar one as the Think Racing mega squad kept it together for all but one lap setting up their sprinter Leon Moser. Team Gap's Ray Diaz kept it interesting and looked to poised to upset the Think team, but Leon edged him in the final sprint to take win. What made Ray's result even more impressive was that he had a flat tire with two laps to go. A quick wheel change from a team mate and a solo bridge back to the peloton kept him alive in the hunt for the win, but his effort just came up short.RACE NOTES: Metro/Sanchez's Scott Wilmingham was in a short lived break with Chann McRae that might have stuck had he not been shouting "Can someone take a picture of me and Chann in a break, Anybody out there, please take a picture!"
