Music has been a vital element of worship at University Baptist Church since the church was established. Utilizing the talents of singers and instrumentalists within the congregation and the community, the music ministry has presented a wide spectrum of musical styles from all historical periods of composition. UBC welcomes all interested persons to participate in any of the ensembles, regardless of level of musicianship, church affiliation or religious preference.

Chancel Choir

Currently, the congregation is led in worship by the Chancel Choir, Helen Miers, director, and by Charles Barnett, organist. Music is selected to enhance the seasons of the Church Year, to support Scriptural texts from the Lectionary, but above all, to meet the worship needs of the congregation.

In recent years, the Chancel Choir has presented such works as Vivaldi's Gloria (with University Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir), three motets for Advent and Christmas by Giovanni Gabrieli (in conjunction with University Christian Church and St. Austin's Catholic Church), and "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross" by Dubois. Each week, the Choir presents music in worship that includes anthems with varied accompaniments, such as string quartet, solo cello, oboe and organ, flute and organ, and oboe and classical guitar. We welcome special guest artists from around the state to present music in our services, as well as local ensembles who would want use our sanctuary for concerts and recitals. In June of 1998, the Turtle Creek Chorale and Women's Chorus of Dallas presented a joint concert to benefit the restoration of the historical doors of UBC.

Chancel Choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7:35 p.m. in the Choir Room. For more information, contact Helen Miers.

UBC Handbell Ensemble

In addition, UBC has a growing hand bell choir which meets each Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Choir Room. The Handbell Ensemble is directed by Lily Watson and plays once a month during worship. We are always looking for more ringers! If you are interested, stop by the choir room one Tuesday night at 7:00 pm and try us out. Contact Lily Watson for more information.
