Our Legacy

      Two great strengths have emerged from Center Grove as the local Church: Relationships and Missions.

        RELATIONSHIPS are important to Center Grove because relationships are improtant to God. We are a very friendly church, both to one another and to our visitors. We care for each other as family, especially in times of trouble.
        MISSIONS have always been close to the heart of Center Grove perhaps because Center Grove began out of the need for a new local church. Together we support the building of Christ's Kingdom and we kindly help those around us. We must continue to excercise our strengths to become everything that God wants us to be.

       In 1911, in an area between Kerhsaw and Heath Springs some farming families realized the lack of organized Baptist work in their rural community. This group began Sunday School in the old Walnut Hill Schoolhouse. Soon after, Center Grove Baptist Church was officially constituted October 15, 1911, with 33 members and Rev. J. F. Hammond as pastor. Construction began immediately for a large, one-room church building in the grove of trees between two cities. Center Grove's Sunday School met weekly while preaching services were held on two Sunday afternoons each month until 1950. At this point, a pastorium was built and the first full-time pastor was called, Rev. J. Dewey Hobbs, Jr. on July 23, 1950.
        Since then, remodeling and construction became neccessary for the expanding work of Christ at Center Grove. An education building replaced the old in 1965. The parking lot was paved in 2001, and the sanctuary received major renovations in the winter of 2003.

        A Church's legacy is too often talked about in terms of dates and property. The true legacy of Center Grove, however is it's relationships built for almost a century, both with Jesus Christ and one another.
        While the building and faces change from time to time, the landscape of faith,hope and love remain strong to nurture relationships between God and His people halfway between Kershaw and Heath Springs.
