2. The treasure of the Isla de Muerta curses a thief with immortality. Why is their eternal life not our idea of Heaven? 3. In the end Barbosa is able to finally feel but ironically he only feels to feel his own death. Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you couldnt feel? 4. The villains are in a somewhat sympathetic situation where they feel bad for the state that theyre in and the amount of torment theyve been through. Is this repentance? 5. Barbosa explained to Elizabeth Swan that, the moonlight shows us for what we really are. We are not among the living and so we cannot die, but neither are we dead. The idea is not that the skeletons, by daylight look like they have flesh. In anything but moonlight they are flesh and blood; theyre simply immortal. But, by moonlight their real state is revealed which is basically a personification of greed. If a rotting skeleton is the personification of greed, what would the personification of pride look like? 6. Redemption was often connected to blood in this movie. Right before cutting Elizabeths hand Barbosa says, Began by blood, by blood undone. Isnt this what is taught in the Bible? 7. Barbosa explains the effects of the pirates curse like this, we came to realize the drink would not satisfy, food turned to ash in our mouths and all the pleasurable company in the world could not slake our lust. We are cursed men compelled by greed we were, but now we are consumed by it. Why cant celebrity and wealth seem to satisfy most people? 8. The movies idea of justice says if you want to be greedy, then the punishment is that youll be greedy forever. Romans chapter one says that God gave rebellious people over to the lusts of their hearts, he gave them over to degrading passions and a depraved mind. How is there a connection here? 9. Pirates are always associated with an obsession for treasure. Jack said that Will was completely obsessed with treasure; but, not all treasure is silver and gold. What does he mean and how are people today obsessed with treasure? 10. Jesus once said, Matt13:45-46(NCV), the kingdom of heaven is like a man looking for fine pearls. When he found a very valuable pearl, he went and sold everything he had and bought it. What is Jesus talking about and does it relate to obsession? 11. Will Turner discovers that on the rare occasion, pursuing the right course of action demands an act of piracy. He also learns that not all pirates are bad and that not all laws are right. (For example, the law insisted that Jack Sparrow be hung even though he helped save the day.) How does this agree or disagree with your values? 12. The Code is more like Guidelines. This phrase often came up. What are some examples of pragmatism or situational ethics in the movie? copyright by Steve Miller 2004 |
