A Lady's Journal
I sent him a note this morning. I expect a reply by this afternoon. I received my reply. The Queen herself came to see me. Yet, my joy at the honor of her visit evaporated when I learned the reason for it. It seems that the Prince is soon to be betrothed to some princess or other; and my letter have nearly caused a halt to the negotiations. Her Majesty "respectfully requested" that I cease my "throwing [myself] at [her] son." I have never been so humiliated in my life. It would appear that my love read my letters aloud at the dining table as a joke. He was only trying to bed me all those years ago, not wed me. Oh, just wait 'til I can get my revenge for this. They will rue this day.
During the night, I formulated a plan. My husband's properties became mine at his death. Therefore, I will remain in London in my house. There I have every letter that the Prince ever wrote me. I will make copies of each letter; and send them to Her Majesty. Well, perhaps a forger will make the copies. Father leaves next week; and he thinks that I am going back with them. He will certainly be surprised.
Father left in shock this morning. I was packed and ready to leave; but, instead of allowing my things to be loaded onto his onto Father's coach, I ordered that they be loaded onto mine. Father had a fit about how single young women do not stay in London alone. I countered his argument with one simple fact: I am not single, but widowed. That sent him storming out of his own house! I am now in my own room, not the one I shared with my husband. I chose this room for myself. This evening, I will set my plan into motion. Step 1, initiated. I am befriending his latest mistress. I can't bring myself to even write her name. She is astonishingly beautiful. If I did need to use her, I would avoid her. After a few moments conversation, she invited me to tea in her apartments tomorrow. Well, it is nearly dawn. I should get some sleep.
This afternoon, I have tea with the mistress. I will learn what I can from her; and then, I will get rid of her. I must go. It's time to get ready. Blast! He saw us talking; and now, he has dropped like she had the pox. I've invited her to stay here with me. I actually like the gel. She and I could have been close friends sooner if HRH hadn't been such a cad. Perhaps I will tell her about my plan. Oh well, she is arriving here today because he kicked her out of his house, which is where she had been living. Her parents won't take her back; so, she has nowhere else to go, but the street. I wouldn't wish that fate onto the Prince himself.
The mistress arrived yesterday with four dresses, two cloaks, one fur coat, and five reticules full of jewelry. The Prince told her that she could only take what she could carry alone in one trip. She filled her reticules with the jewels that he gave her, wore four dresses at once, and wore a fur coat and two cloaks. The Prince had hoped to give the jewels to his next mistress. Oh well, he should never have gotten involved with an intelligent woman. Contrary to what I said earlier, the mistress's name is Missy. Missy and I are going to need some new clothes. Well, Missy is anyway. A dressmaker is coming this afternoon to give us a fitting. We will have several new gowns each. Missy, of course, will have more than me. Ah, good. The dressmaker is here. Perhaps I should tell Missy that she is getting some new clothes. Lord, help us. Missy is with child. This could ruin her. My plans for revenge can wait. Missy is more important. We will go to my country estate. (Yes, I have a country estate, two actually.) There, she can rest and avoid scandal. Unless, the Prince already knows.
My neighbor is a charming widower. I rather like him. Of course, he seems to prefer Missy. She wishes to tell him of her condition; and, I told her to follow her heart. She told him; and then, he did the most amazing thing. He asked her to marry him; and she accepted. Ironically, he is a retired physician. So, he knew about Missy's condition the entire time. But when Missy told him, it showed him the extent to which she trusted him. This prompted the proposal. Missy will be alright now. Soon, though, I must return to London. I hate leaving Missy, but there are some things I must take care of there.
