about me
update: 2004
Welcome to the web diary of a home building project.

the mission:  Build a brand-new, energy-star certified house, modeled in the classic, early 20th century bungalow (a.k.a. Arts & Crafts) style, using environmentally friendly building methods and materials -- without sending the homeowner into bankrupsy or the builder to a mental institution.

the location:  A gently wooded, 32-acre, family owned property in rural Dighton, Massachusetts.

the update:  (february 23, 2003)  Construction was (for the most part) completed around January 1.  Final permits, approvals, and inspections were completed shortly thereafter.  The construction loan converted (officially) to a 30-year mortgage.  The Energy Star folks came in and did their final inspection and blower test.  The contractor and I worked out a few kinks with the radiant floor heating system, fireplace, and heat-recovery ventilator.  I had a Kinetico Whole-House Water Filtration sytem installed, to correct problems with hydrogen sulfide and ferrous iron in the well water.  And, drum-roll please...moved-in in early February!  It feels great to be in the house, after so long.

the updated update: (march 7, 2004)  Follow the link to the new webpage to see updated photos, interior shots, and incredibly insightful, thoroughly engaging commentary by yours truly.
