history
* The Montenegrins came in the 6th century, from the region between Baltic sea and the present-day city of Hanover. They were pagans, but through assimilation and coexistence they accepted Christianity from the Romans. Dukla was the first state under the first dynasty and Zeta under the second and third dynasties.
*The next 180 years it was ruled by their Vladikas or Bishops who were elected by popular assemblies and were true spiritual and popular leaders. In the seventeenth century, Montenegrins fought against the Turkish armies. They kept their independance beyond the Montenegrin highlands.
*In World War I, Montenegro fought alongside the allied armies. At that time, King Nikola I Petrovic of Montenegro became increasingly powerful. In 1918 the Serbian king Petar Karadjordjevic occupied Montenegro. Following the occupation by Serbian troops, the Montenegrin kingdom was abolished and annexed to Serbia and King Nikola was banned from returning to Montengro.
*On Orthodox Christmas, January 7,1919,Montenegrins staged a national uprising against the decision of the "Grand National Assembly" for annexation to Serbia.
The Christmas Uprising resulted in a war of Montenegrins against the Serbian occupationthat lasted until 1926.
The Christmas Uprising, about which new historical documents are now being published for the first time since the 1920s, shows that Montenegro's entry into Yugoslavia was forced and illegitimate, in a fashion similar to the soviet annexation of the three Baltic states.
