E-Bay Report
Lesson Instructions:
Write a short report on the auctions you find in your topic.  How many good items are there?  What prices are common once the auctions are completed for such items?   Are auction items always labeled correctly?  What have you learned from seeing the pictures online?  Briefly answer these questions in your report and include links to auction pages that illustrate your points
In doing this E-Bay search, I sorted thru the entire pre-1900 listing of clothing to find a few things from the 1890s that were similar to my study garment.

One of the garments was just
absolutely gorgeous

To see the dress in more clarity, with at least a dozen pictures of it, I looked at the sellers website, which is linked to the picture below.  I also wrote to the seller and got permission to use the photos of this dress. Back, side, inside and other detail pictures are on this site.

This royal blue or deep purple 2 piece dress is much more impressive than my study garment. The similarity to my study garment is in the overall silhouette and the fact that it is a 2-piece garment.
The garment that looked similar to the bodice of my study garment was a black mourning  jacket, pictured below.  I also wrote for permission to use this garment.  The reply I got explained that the pictures did not stay on ebay after the auction closed, so I do not know how long the link on the jacket front will be active.

This auction had just begun, so the starting bid was still at $9.99. Now, in April, the bid is up to $28.67
The description on the site reads:
"
This Victorian black mourning jacket or blouse is made of a silk fabric with a ruffled trim. The blouse has a few main seams that look to be machine done, but most of the stitching on the garment is done by hand. The inside is lined with flexible stays and has many hook and eye closures down the front. The bust measures approximately 34 inches, the waist 27 inches, the neck 13-1/2 inches, sleeve length approximately 23 inches, and the shoulder seam to hem measures 16 inches. Except for some small spots of discoloration in the silk, condition is very good with no tears in the fabric."
The auction was still going on for this dress but the price when I was looking was $125.
Another garment, also similar in shape and style to my study garment was found here:  It was priced at $130 and is pictured below.
Since the garment I have to study is a wedding gown, I also checked out the 1897 SILK WEDDING GOWN!!!! EXCELLENT COND!! since the time frame is only 2 years different from my garment

A partial description from the site follows:
"The bodice has a delicately designed lacing over the yolk that ends at the shoulders, with little silk suspender-type leads that go to lovely silk bows that rest on shoulders.  The sleeves are very full just at the top half of the upper arm, accented by two tiers of tight gathers and a ruffle at the bicep. The remainder of the sleeve is tightly fit, with bows at the cuff.  The same gathering/ruffle pattern outlines the yolk lining, with the right side extending down to the waist.  The front closes with 16 hook/eye, for a nice snug fit. There are 11 stays, with flawless lining.  Measurements for bodice: Bust: 29", waist: 22", shoulder width: 10".
This beautiful dress is priced at   $182.50/currentbid $225 (3/8)
There were not a lot of actual, vintage garments available from the 1890s.  I did see any number of fashion magazines & ads from magazines with pictures similar to my garment.  Also included in the Pre-1900 category were reproduction clothes, so I discovered that, at least in this category, E-Bay does not distinguish between vintage & reproduction.  The items shown were all in the good category, and the descriptions that I read tried very hard to cover all the honesty bases.  The pictures & the descriptions given meshed together very well.  All the prices I saw were in the under $200 price range, as noted above.

This was a fun assignment.  I expect that if I had gone off-E-Bay to search vintage clothes in this time frame I would have found many more actual garments.  It would be interesting to do a price comparison between E-Bay auction prices & the stores/web-sites vintage clothing prices.

Seeing the pictures on E-Bay was very enlightening.  I had expected to find more garments, but I did not expect to see the detail photography that was given for each piece.  You are right-- E-Bay can be addictive!
