Songs Before Sword

.
These songs span the time period from the Second War of the Races until the end of The Sword of Shannara.

Because of my interest in filk (that is, SF/F folk music), I tried for a long time to write a Shannara filksong. After a few less-than-successful attempts, I finally wrote this song about Bremen...

Bremen's Song -- by Cee (copyright 1988)

The sun shone brightly on the spears
And the wind blew on the plain.
Ten thousand elves rode out to war.
Pray to come home again.

At the side of the Elven King, rode I,
At the side of the Elven lord,
Who in his hand bore hope and truth;
I forged for him a sword.

My son, forgive me what I do,
Forgive me if you can,
To leave you a fight I could not win
And a shadow on the land.

The dark lord met on the field of war
The Elf King could not abide,
And left me face to face with death
In one who had not died.

At the end of power, at the end of life,
He pulled me into hell,
Grey out of time in a limbo world
And bound me with a spell.

My son, forgive me what I do,
Forgive me if you can,
To leave you a fight I could not win
And a shadow on the land.

The end of his power bound him as well,
But I know he shall return.
And I cannot impede his flight,
Or teach all you must learn.

My death must wait on his demise,
But I'll tell you what little I may,
As now you stand alone to face
Another battle day.

My son, forgive me what I do,
Forgive me if you can,
To leave you a fight I could not win
And a shadow on the land.

In the Alternate Shannara Universe, Allanon was Bremen's natural son. Allanon's mother died at his birth, and he spent his earliest days first at the Druids' Keep, then later in exile with his father in the Westland. While far from perfect, compared to later events his childhood among the great trees of the Westland forests must have seemed idyllic. This haunting song about growing up captures something of how he felt after the Second War of the Races...

Innocence Lost -- by Julia Ecklar
as performed by Technical Difficulties on Please Stand By

Innocence lost
Like the first winds of summer.
Manhood outrunning me soon.
Daydreams all dead
And I choose to replace them;
I chase them and hear the dark tune.

There's nowhere to run
And no youth to use running.
Nothing but fear spurs me on.
My past is behind
And somehow I can't see it,
Like the words of a forgotten song.

A song
In the midst of the summer
With birds singing love everywhere.
A boy
With his heart overflowing,
In his innocence having no care.

But the music fades fast,
Faster still when I'm trying.
The memories leave echoes behind.
Like the chords of that song,
Now lost in confusion,
My innocence lost back in time.

I can't find the peace
That should come with the learning.
I can't find the meanings at all.
And the time won't come back,
It just taunts from a distance.
I still hear old innocence call.

I hear, but can't answer the call.

From the very first time I heard this song about the pitfalls of duty, it seemed to me to fit Allanon perfectly. Allanon and Adrianne spent much of their long lives apart because of his sense of responsibility to the Four Lands that kept him on the move, trying to solve problems everywhere, always only a few steps ahead of trouble. This song captures the ironies of his character very well.

The Color of Right -- words by Neil Peart, music by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson
as performed by Rush on Test For Echo

I don't have an explanation
For another lonely night.
I just feel this sense of mission
And the sense of what is right.

Take it easy on me now---
I'd be there if I could.
I'm so full of what is right,
I can't see what is good.

It's a hopeless situation,
Lie awake for half the night.
You're not sure what's going on here,
But you're sure it isn't right.

Make it easy on yourself---
There's nothing more you can do.
You're so full of what is right,
You can't see what is true

A quality of justice,
A quantity of light,
A particle of mercy
Makes the color of right.

Gravity and distance
Change the passage of light;
Gravity and distance
Change the color of right.

Take it easy on me now---
I'd be there if I could.
I'm so full of what is right,
I can't see what is good.

Make it easy on yourself---
There's nothing more you can do.
You're so full of what is right,
You can't see what is true.

A quality of justice,
A quantity of light,
A particle of mercy,
Makes the color of right.

Gravity and distance
Change the passage of light;
Gravity and distance
Change the color of right.

Change the color of right.

Because of his desire to protect her from danger, and due to the patriarchal customs of Druid society, Adrianne spent much of her time in the Deep Westland, waiting for Allanon's all too infrequent returns. This is very much her song.

Snow is Lightly Falling -- by Triona Ni Dhomhnaill
as performed by Nightnoise on Winter Solstice III

Snow is lightly falling
In the forest after dark;
Wishing it would cover up
The deep well of my heart,
As I wait alone for you.

Above the dewy mountain
Where the air is clean and pure,
And the snow is lightly falling,
And my heart cannot endure
The quiet lonesome calling
Of the season's hungry birds,
As I wait alone for you, my love,
In silence without words.

Keep forever looking back
On seasons that have past.
In the very depths of winter, love,
You came to me at last.
I have not forgotten yet
That hushed October wine
That sang of love forever
Through the spirit and the mind.
I have not forgotten
That little Christmas yet,
When hushed October winds,
They sang of heaven on this earth.

Way beyond the snow,
Trees rising swiftly like a fire,
Sparks the pining for a loved one
And the kindling of desire.
And the wind sings of love forever
Through the spirit and the mind.
And I keep you in my heart
With the truest emerald pine. (words of last line uncertain)

For a few years I had a very vague idea of a scene in which Adrianne convinces Allanon to let her try (after many miscarriages) just once more to bear a child, with Andrea being the result. When I heard Elton John sing this song at the end of The Lion King, the scene crystalized. This is still one of my favorite songs ever.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight -- by Tim Rice/Elton John
as performed by Elton John in Disney's The Lion King

There's a calm surrender
To the rush of day
When the heat of a rolling wind
Can't be turned away,
An enchanted moment
And it sees me through.
It's enough for this restless warrior
Just to be with you.

And can you feel the love tonight?
It is where we are.
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we've got this far.
And can you feel the love tonight?
How it's let you rest?
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best.

There's a time for everyone
If they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope
Moves us all in turn.
There's a rhyme and reason
To the wild outdoors
When the heart of this star-crossed voyager
Beats in time with yours.

And can you feel the love tonight?
It is where we are.
It's enough for this wide-eyed wanderer
That we've got this far.
And can you feel the love tonight?
How it's let you rest?
It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best.

It's enough to make kings and vagabonds
Believe the very best.

I had to alter the lyrics (in the grand tradition of filking) a little (but not much) to make this into a Shannara filksong about Allanon. This is a dark and pessimistic song, and suits, I think, Allanon's feelings in the years immediately preceeding Sword, after he has seen, over the years, the near-extermination both of his own people and almost every heir of Shannara whom he tried to protect.

When the Killing Ends -- by Cythnia McQuillin, alt. by Cee
performed by Cynthia McQuillin on Bayfilk 3: Center Stage

They say that nothing in life is free,
For every good thing you pay a fee.
You sow your seeds just to reap regrets;
The devil collects on every debt,
And nothing in life is free.

Is there anything else you can do?
Is there anything else you can try?
Is there anyplace else you can go?
Is there anything left but to die?

You made your life a game of war;
You sold yourself many years before.
If the cause is good, it's still the same:
You only have yourself to blame
If your life is a game of war.

Chorus

You make believe the game's not real
And you try to stack the cards you deal.
The game's too big, you'll never win
Until you throw your last hand in.
And you know that the game is real.

Chorus

And all you have when the killing ends
Is a head full of hate and a few good friends.
You do what you can for the ones you save,
The rest you lay down in the grave,
And you cry when the killing ends.

Is there anything else you can do?
Is there anything else you can try?
Is there anyplace else you can go?
Is there anything left,
Anything left,
Anything left...but to die?

I really enjoyed the animated Anastasia. So what if it wasn't true to life? (I did a bunch of research, and and if you're interested in the real story,
check out it out in my History section.) In a story about a girl looking for the secret to her past, it was easy to find songs that fit Andrea, especially this one about knowledge that hovers on the edge of memory.

Once Upon a December -- by Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty
from the soundtrack of the animated film Anastasia

Dancing bears, painted wings,
Things I almost remember,
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December.

Someone holds me safe and warm
Horses prance through a silver storm.
Figures dancing gracefully
Across my memory.

Far away, long ago,
Glowing dim as an ember.
Things my heart used to know.
Things it yearns to remember.
And a song someone sings
Once upon a December.

This little snippet of song from Disney's Beauty and the Beast makes me think of Andrea, who--like Belle--doesn't quite fit in in her village. I also like the irony that Andrea's little "adventure" to the Northland, taking place at the same time as Sword is not *at all* what Allanon had planned.

from Belle (reprise) -- by Alan Menken/Howard Ashman
from the soundtrack of Disney's Beauty and the Beast

I want adventure in the great wide somewhere,
I want it more than I can tell.
And for once it might be grand
To have someone understand
I want so much more than they've got planned.

----

This song fits with Andrea's feelings as realizes that the instinct (in truth, a geas placed on her by her mother) she is trusting in to help her find her unknown father is leading her into the Northland.

Journey to the Past -- by Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty
from the soundtrack of the animated film Anastasia

Heart, don't fail me now. Courage, don't desert me.
Don't turn back now that we're here.
People always say life is full of choices.
No one ever mentions fear.
Or how the world can seem so vast
On a journey to the past.

Somewhere down this road I know someone's waiting.
Years of dreams just can't be wrong.
Arms will open wide, I'll be safe and wanted,
Finally home where I belong.
Well, starting now, I'm learning fast!
On this journey to the past.

Home, Love, Family.
There was once a time I must have had them too.
Home, Love, Family,
I will never be complete until I find you.

One step at a time, one hope, then another.
Who knows where this road may go?
Back to who I was, on to find my future;
Things my heart still needs to know.
Yes! Let this be a sign!
Let this road be mine!
Let it lead me to my past.
And bring me home at last!
