Orl Fane (Brothers Hildebrandt--1977) This is a seldom-seen unused preliminary sketch by the Brothers Hildebrandt for The Sword of Shannara. (Used by permission.) The Hildebrandts' robust images of the people and places in the Four Lands helped form my original impressions of the Shannara universe. In particular, I was influenced by the portrayal of Allanon as a lean, powerful person in the prime of life; I'm afraid I don't have much patience with other artists' conceptions of Allanon as an ancient stick-thin wraith.
