This is it, folks; last update before I go on my two week vacation, during which I hope never to sit in front of a computer for the entire duration.

Yesterday being Canada Day, the plan was to get together at a friend's who lives close to downtown and watch the fireworks from here.  Either there was a mix-up or a change of plans, but anyway, I invited the rest of us over to my place instead.  We headed down with a half-hour to go, naively believing we'd find somewhere to park - no such luck.  So we voted unanimously to get the heck out of there before the fireworks were over so we didn't get stuck in traffic.  Did get a bit of a view of them out the back window though as we were getting away.  Then we had one of those 'had to be there' moments - my friend who was driving us home couldn't see too well and thought it was a good idea to flick on his high-beams - right in the faces of everyone watching the fireworks down both sides of the road.  So yeah, if you got blasted by him I know who did it :)

Prior to that I went on an excellent rollerblading excusion with my friend TS from work.  She taught me a useful thing or two about braking and the importance of wrist guards (which reminds me I'll have to get a decent pair when I get back from vacation).  I also learned that you can go a heck of a lot farther when you have someone else for company; less concentration on how far you've gone and how worn out you're getting, I guess.  I must have gone twice as far as I've ever gone before, which had me feeling pretty proud of myself - didn't even get any blisters.

I bought a sketchbook to take with me on my trip out east.  I took a bunch of art classes in highschool and I don't feel I ever got really good at it, but it's something different I thought of on a whim and might enjoy doing again.  I'll probably just do scenery, or keep my eyes open and try my hand at it whenever the moment grabs me.  Also picked up some excellent light reading material - a one volume set of the
Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis.  That was my version of Harry Potter when I was 7 or 8, and the series responsible for hooking me on the whole fantasy genre (Lord of the Rings came shortly after).  I'm equally amazed at how much of the stories I still remember and how much I've forgotten.  Reading these again, kids books or not, is like revisiting long lost friends.

Bon voyage, aloha, and see ya later!
