| Tuesday April 9th 2002 I'm all moved in now and the place is looking pretty good. I'm going with green in the sitting room, blue in the bedroom and maroon in the bathroom. I still have a few boxes lying around that I need to sort out; then I need some plants and maybe a couple more pictures for the walls. Then we'll see how pleased I am with it all and go from there. I winced a couple of times this weekend and it had nothing to do with the weight of the furniture. Once was at the grocery store, which I was expecting to get nasty bill-wise and was; then again at Walmart, when I racked up nearly a hundred bucks more getting essential stuff I'd never paid all that much attention to until I suddenly didn't have it anymore: shower curtain, dish rack, garbage pail, etc. Still need an ice tray, a bootmat, a handy container for kitchen implements so some of them can stay on the counter, etc. Got really adventuresome and bought a copy of 'Cooking for Dummies' at the bookstore. I can already do some basic stuff like pasta, chicken and rice, etc. But I'd like to get a few basic terms and rules of thumb down, and try expanding my horizons so I'm not cooking the same four or five things over and over. It's not as hard as I used to assume it was, and who knows, this cooking stuff might even prove to be fun. There's still some tenants in the building that lived there when I was there before. I met one on Sunday, a little old lady taking her dog out for a walk. That dog's sixteen now, but he still looked pretty eager to get out and do some exercising; her too, for that matter. So, I'm picking up old habits again - only the good ones, of course. I'm starting to set aside loonies and quarters to pay for laundry; collecting recycling so I can bring it outside to the bins; keeping the small windows open so I don't roast like a basted turkey. I'm also creating some new ones, now that I don't feel put upon to clean up a home that I know my wife's keeping. I'm making the bed, keeping the kitchen area clean, tidying the closets even though they're out of sight of most guests. It's best to establish these patterns now, putting things back where they belong and so on. I'm purposely not providing myself with any kind of shelf in the entry, so I won't end up piling things all over it that actually belong somewhere else when I come in the door. So far, I'm taking to this new lifestyle pretty well I'd say. |
