Welcome to the Cvennes, in the amazing French Dpartement of Lozre
The Region :

Lozre is a very picturesque mountainous
dpartement in the Cvennes. The region is part of the Massif Central, with rugged and beautiful uplands south of the Auvergne, which Stevenson explored with his donkey about 100 years ago.
The geology of the Cvennes is an amazing mixture of granite, limestone and schist, creating striking contrasts of landscape with crags and gorges, dizzying cliffs (Gorges du Tarn, Gorges de la Jonte), huge areas of forest, breathtaking views (Mont Aigoual), fabulous underground caves (Aven Armand, Dargilan, Demoiselles). Enjoy the sense of freedom and the many
activities available in this region.
The whole region abounds in historical sites, from dinosaur footprints at St Laurent de Trves to the many vestiges of the Roman Empire (Pont du Gard), the Templar forteress of La Couvertoirade (12c), romanesque churches, castles built on cliffs like eagle nests, medieval villages (Ste Enimie, La Garde Gurin), and many 'lieux de mmoire' commemorating the persecution of the Huguenots by Louis XIVth and subsequent bitter Guerre des
Camisards.
In the Cvennes, you will find nature at its best, a mixture of Mediterranean and alpine fauna and flora : rare species of birds (Bonelli warbler) and raptors (eagles, griffon vultures, kites, buzzards), mammals (European beavers), butterflies (apollo and swallowtails), and in the spring, wild orchids, tulips, daffodils, narcissi and martagon lilies.
The nearest town  is
Florac, a pretty little tourist centre, which is the administrative HQ of the Parc national des Cvennes. Weekly markets in most nearby towns and villages, lovely local gastronomy and many first class restaurants in the area.

To make the most of your stay in this amazing corner of "la France profonde", let British naturalist David Dickenson take you to the best displays of orchids or his favourite spots for watching griffon vultures. Visit his beautifully illustrated website on www.naturescene.co.uk
My grateful thanks to him for some of this website's photos.
