Beginnings

Much confusion surrounds the name
"Jurassic 5", as it is obviously a six-piece crew: four MCs and two DJs. The
group claim that in 1995 a friend of Chali 2NAs mother, listening in on rehearsals,
exclaimed: "yall think youre the Fantastic Five, youre more like
the Jurassic five." According to the group, the name seemed to fit with what they
were trying to do; bringing something old into new times, like the movie. Admittedly, it
does sounds better than Jurassic 6.

Jurassic 5, or J5 to their fans, was formed in 1993 as a result of
combining two separate groups, Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee. Both groups had seen
one another perform at LAs Good Life Caf, a venue that helped breed the likes of
Pharcyde and Volume Ten. Rebels of Rhythm MCs Akil and Zaakir thus teamed up with the
Unity Committees MCs, Chali 2NA and Marc 7, plus its turntablist, Cut Chemist. The
third member of Rebels of Rhythm, the late Shawnee, wasnt involved newly formed
Jurassic 5. DJ Nu-Mark, friend of Cut Chemist since their meeting at Rat Race in Silver
Lake in 1992, was the final piece in J5s formation. |
