Welcome to the world of miniature painting. This page has been created
to provide assistance to the person new to the hobby, provide new tips
and tricks to experienced painters and, eventually, provide a gallery of
work. Our focus will be on 25 to 30 mm scale fantasy and science fiction
miniatures (a.k.a. Warhammer, or Games Workshop miniatures) but the techniques
demonstrated in these pages are applicable to most scales
Miniature wargames can trace their history back to the 1700's when the
Prussian Military Academy began to use a game to teach military tactics
to young cadets. The game, Kriegspiel, was mostly focused on maneuvers
and logistics, not very exciting. By the 1960's a small hobby group had
formed around reenacting famous battles using lead soldiers. Gettysburg,
Waterloo, etc. all came to life on the tabletop as armchair generals tried
to rewrite history. In the 1970's games took a decidedly fantasy turn with
the development of role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. Fantasy
wargames hit their peak in the late 1980's and the king of them all was
Warhammer by Games Workshop.
Today many companies manufacture historical, fantasy, and even science
fiction wargames that use metal and plastic miniatures. Although most of
the metal miniatures are now made of non-lead pewter. The fun is not just
in playing these games but also, in painting the miniatures.
