Mission ‘75

Wednesday: October Fifteenth 1975

Theme:   World Community

Speaker: Rose Rolan

22 years ago, my husband Frank was in the Army.

My husband wrote home that he had Hodgekin’s disease, the

same day that I brought my son home from the hospital.

I was crushed, and I only got through it through community!

Three years ago, Frank had a relapse, and community helped again.

Most of us in the Bailey-Delavan area have chosen it for good reason.

In the panic of staying in the city, versus moving to the suburbs,

The Bailey-Delavan concerned citizens group organized blocks.

There were chairpersons, and need identification.

We were fighting Block-Busting, we barred realtors from approaching

homeowners.

 We printed a Newsletter.

400 participated in a baked goods sale, we raised $600 profit.

We used St. Gerard’s Gestetner machine (a copier).

Without St. Gerard’s facilities, we would have had no newsletter.

There was a Bailey-Delavan Youth Center.

A Bailey-Delavan Community service center was set up in a loaned Barber Shop.

(1477 East Delavan Ave. at Freund)

42 youths worked seven weeks for the elderly.

There was a Pre-School Parent-Child program.

There were square dances for the elderly.

We must work together!

Our time is valuable, no matter how little we have!

The Joy and Peace I find in working with the community is overwhelming!
