LAST THOUGHTS

The Black Plague had long-term consequences on Western Europe. You have seen some of the immediate consequences of and responses to the Black Plague. What other possible results of the high death rate might have also occurred? Were there, for example, any political repercussions?

In today's world with the rapid movement of peoples the spread of disease is even more potentially devastating. Are the types of reactions to the Black Plague ones that the modern world still follows when unknown disease occurs? How does society treat and respond to those who are afflicted by incurable and infectious diseases? What are the social, scientific and cultural effects of these diseases on today's society? Has the need for discrimination and scapegoating changed over the centuries?
