ABOUT GET INVOLVED EVENTS
Crawford  County Habitat for Humanity became an official part of the world-wide family   of Habitat for Humanity affiliates on June 1, 1996. The first homeowner was selected September 16, 1996, and ground was broken for the first house on November 2, 1996. This house was dedicated in July 1997, followed by  groundbreaking for the
second house on August 25, 1997. Work on the second house began the day after the groundbreaking. The second house was completed, dedicated, and occupied in the summer of 1998. The next house was completed on a similar schedule, carrying out our commitment to build one house a year.
In 1999 CCHFH was invited by Habitat Midwest to apply for a challenge grant of $20,000, provided by an anonymous donor, if an equal amount was raised locally. The challenge was that CCHFH would have to build TWO houses in one year! Not without some trepidation the Board responded in faith, positively and with support from local residents we met the challenge and ground was broken for two houses in 1999. One home is in Hutsonville, fulfilling the hope held from the beginning to build in Crawford  County outside Robinson. At this time, the Board also entered into an agreement with the Robinson High School Building Trades Class (which draws students from all county schools) which enabled students to work on the Robinson home,
with Habitat supplying the site, materials, and additional  volunteers. The Robinson home was dedicated on June 28, 2000 and the Hutsonville home was dedicated on December  20, 2000. Ground was broken for our sixth house, on Ash Street in Robinson,  on August 30, 2000 - again working with the Building Trades class.   We held the House Blessing for the Ash Street house  (see picture at right) with the new homeowners, Dana Sanders and her family, on August 9, 2001.
We recently completed our newest home, the Joni LeGrand home in Oblong.  The House Blessing was held June 13, 2002.  At left you see Joni and her daughter Alexa receving a Bible from Rev. Larry Moreau at the house blessing (more photos on the Special Events page).  At present, due to homeowner familes who have moved out of the area, we have TWO vacant homes - one in Robinson on Oak Street and one in Hutsonville.  We are currently seraching for partner families for both these homes.  The families would purchase the homes from CCHFH with an interest-free mortgage, then work off their "sweat equity" by completing or refurbising the homes, and by helping build the next Habitat home.  If you know a low-income family you think would qualify, please encourage them to contact us immediately at 546-0171!
Habitat for Humanity affiliates are expected to tithe from undesignated funds to build houses overseas, which cost only a fraction of the cost of houses here. An affiliate in Sri Lanka of approximately the same size and age as ours was selected by the Board to receive our support, and we have contributed to the building of several houses there.
Truly, for Crawford County Habitat for Humanity   "The excitement is building!"
