Nguyen Huy Hoan

Born in 1973.

Hoan was brought up in Quang Ninh province, near Ha Long Bay.  He started to study art and Son Mai at the provincial culture centre in 1986. Son Mai painting master Bui Tuan Thanh, who was invited to teach at the centre at that time, discovered Hoan's talent in Son Mai and invited him to continue his training in Hanoi in 1989. Hoan was trained at master Thanh's workshop and studied with many skilled craftsmen as well as the painter Thanh himself.
In 1998, Hoan started to work independently.

Hoan's paintings depict nostalgic everyday life of the Vietnamese. He is also brilliant in portraits. He is one of very few talented lacquer painters who posseses high craftsmanship.
