Personal Religious Identifications.
Under constant questioning from "jailhouse preachers" (drug dealing pimps, mostly) while I was the librarian in a county jail, I finally wrote out a list of religions which I admire and identify with, at least in some aspects. The irony of their trying to save my soul escaped them, but they did greatly reinforce my rejection of their salvation by faith belief.

Bible based refutation of salvation by faith alone.

The Voice in the Wilderness.
All four Gospels state that John the Baptist was 'The Voice in the Wilderness' foretold by Isaiah. What did Isaiah really say?

Rationalist International: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rationalist/

The Baha'i Faith: http://www.bahai.org/ The Baha'i Faith is a revealed religion which believes in the teachings of prophets, Baha'ullah, The Bab, Mohammed, Jesus, Abraham, Moses, Zoroaster, Gautama Siddhartha (the Buddha), and Krishna. Since they believe in the revelation of these prophets, they are not Rationalists or Freethinkers. On the other hand, since one of their primary twelve social teachings is "Individual Investigation of the Truth", they are close. As the only revealed religion teaching the complete equality of men and women, they hold a special position of respect from Rationalists.

Orthodox, Old Catholic and Anglican Communions

The Old Catholic movement is a collection of churches which have separated from the Church of Rome since the time of the Protestant Reformation. The Roman Catholic Church separated from the Orthodox Church in 1054 C.E. when the patriarch of Rome rejected the authority of the council of patriarchs (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Rome) and the chair of the council, the Patriarch of Constantinople, and declared himself head of his own church, taking the title of Pope. (Note that the Roman Catholic Church is far from the oldest Christian church, as it so frequently claims. The Orthodox Church is a thousand years older, and the Roman church was part of the Orthodox church for over half of its history.) Since that time, the Pope has led the church into many divergent practices and errors, such as Papal Infallibility, celibacy for the priesthood, and the immaculate conception of Mary. The Old Catholics have sought to restore the church to its original beliefs and practices and correct the obvious errors of the Roman Catholic Church. Most Old Catholics are in communion with the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands, headed by the archbishop of Utrecht, and with the Anglican (Episcopalian) and Orthodox Churches.

In the Philippines, The Philippine Independent Church (Iglesia Filipina Independiente) is the local Old Catholic Church. The movement of rebelling against the exploitation and oppression of the Church of Rome was begun by José Rizal, but did not become a separate church with its own priests until Gregorio Aglipay broke with the Roman Catholic Church soon after the Americans occupied the country and removed the Spanish government. The Philippine Independent Church has been a major force in Philippine religion since that time, it has established communion with both the Anglican Church (Episcopal Church of America) and the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands.
