TRIBUTES

Fictional

This record is the very first tribute album to The Cure but its interest is quite limited : the covers are simply mediocre. It was released in 1995 by the obscure Swedish label October Records and it’s a pain to listen to : covers like Friday I’m in love by Automatic or In between days by Laura Effect are built on dull minimalist electronic beats, whereas other tracks such as The same deep water as you (by Sombre View) are just pale imitations of the original songs. The caterpillar, by Blipp !, is the only listenable cover. A dispensable album.

Automatic, Friday I’m in love ; Sombre View, Lullaby ; Kiethevez, Lovesong ; Vision System, The walk ; Blipp !, The caterpillar ; Esrange, Faith ; Laura Effect, In between days ; Sombre View, The same deep water as you ; Children Within, A forest ; Kiethevez, A foolish arrangement ; Close To Nature, The hanging garden.

100 tears

Cleopatra, a well-known Californian gothic label, released this tribute album in 1997. This record includes major bands of the label at the time ; some are good and others less good... Among the good surprises are the excellent electro-noisy cover of Killing an Arab by The Electric Hellfire Club, the enchanting version of Sinking by The Shroud, and the amazing electro-metal version of A forest by Death Lies Bleeding... But there are a lot of bad surprises, and the general electronic mood of this tribute album is rather dull. Lullaby by Leather Strip and The blood by Fahrenheit 451 are certainly the worst tracks on the CD. This album was eagerly awaited at the time but it is quite disappointing after all.

Nosferatu, One hundred years ; The Electric Hellfire Club, Killing an Arab ; Leather Strip, Lullaby ; Kill Switch... Klick, Jumping someone else’s train ; The Shroud, Sinking ; Fahrenheit 451, The blood ; Crocodile Shop, Let’s go to bed ; Ex-Voto, Shake dog shake ; Wreckage, Pornography ; Razed In Black, Disintegration ; Test Infection, A night like this ; Death Lies Bleeding, A forest ; Bell Book & Candle, Primary.

Here’s the real cure

This very good tribute album was released in 1998 on Diabolik Records’ initiative (a French record label whose manager is a huge Cure fan). French hardcore punk bands are included, just like Sleeppers, Six Pack, Seven Hate or Lt. No (formerly known as Tétines Noires). There are some brilliant tracks on the album : the radical version of Give me it by Sleeppers, the punk versions of Killing an Arab by Belly Button, In between days by Seven Hate and Boys don’t cry by Nothing More, and above all the excellent experimental version of One hundred years par Lt. No. There is also a strange and good dub cover of A strange day by Junior Cony (you will probably like it even if you’re not a reggae fan...). A very good and eclectic tribute album in fact ; probably one of the best Cure tribute records.

Sleeppers, Give me it ; Six Pack, Seventeen seconds ; Near Death Experience, A forest ; Foggy Bottom, In your house ; Belly Button, Killing an Arab ; Seven Hate, In between days ; Prime Time Victim Show, Fascination street ; Junior Cony, A strange day (ina Babylon) ; Mektoub, The hanging garden / Siamese twins ; Nothing More, Boys don’t cry ; Y Front, Charlotte sometimes ; Lt. No, One hundred years.

Porque no puedo ser tu

The idea (from WEA Latina) is quite original : a record of Cure tracks sung in Spanish by South American artists... It includes thirteen covers that vary in quality. The most notable song is perhaps this surprising salsa version (!) of Why can’t I be you ? by Don Pepe ; the most useless one is probably the boring megamix by Si-Se, at the end of the CD. There are also unexceptional faithful covers, like The blood by Fulano De Tal or M by Dolores Delirio, and radically different versions like A forest by Estados Alterados. First listenings to this tribute album may be puzzling, but the whole thing is rather interesting.

Don Pepe, Why can’t I be you ? (Porque no puedo ser tu ?) ; Si-Se, Just like heaven (Como el cielo) ; El Manjar De Los Dioses, If only tonight we could sleep (Si solamente pudiesemos dormir esta noche) ; Man Ray, In between days (Entre dias) ; Volumen Cero, Lovesong (Canción de amor) ; Maria Fatal, 10.15 Saturday night (10.15 sabado a la noche) ; Dolores Delirio, M (M) ; Acida, Apart (Separado) ; Cromafactor/Janice, The lovecats (Gatos de amor) ; Fulano De Tal, The blood (La sangre) ; Icaro Azul, Friday I’m in love (Viernes voy por ti) ; Estados Alterados, A forest (El bosque) ; Si-Se, Total remix (Cure megamix).

Into a sea of Cure (tributo argentino a The Cure)

This tribute album, which was recorded on some Argentinian fans’ initiative and distributed only through the Internet, deserves many superlatives because of its musical diversity (rock, pop, trip-hop, and even indus) and the presence of rarely covered tracks like The exploding boy, The empty world or Homesick. Some versions are similar to the original songs (In between days, A letter to Elise). Worth noting is the excellent crazy version of The empty world by Diver, mixing rock and electronica with a sample from The Glove’s Relax ! There are also a beautiful cover of The funeral party by Mellonta Tauta (thanks to the moving voice of their singer) and two covers in Spanish : A letter to Elise by Bebete El Mar and To wish impossible things by Compañero Asma. A nice musical trip.

Jaime Sin Tierra, Plainsong ; Grand Prix, The lovecats ; Perrocandil, How beautiful you are... ; Playmobil, In between days ; Menos Que Cero, The exploding boy ; Bristol, Friday I’m in love ; Planeta Rica, Boys don’t cry ; X-Rave Seven, Killing an Arab ; Brixton Crenchy, Just like heaven ; Diver, The empty world ; Mellonta Tauta, The funeral party ; Shh..., Lullaby ; Iguana Lovers, Fascination street ; Bebete El Mar, A letter to Elise ; Compañero Asma, To wish impossible things (both songs sung in Spanish !) ; Dios Me Dijo Que Lo Haga, Homesick.

15 imaginary songs

Here’s a tribute album that should delight all electro-gothic fans... This rather mediocre fifteen-track album was recorded by fifteen German bands. All the « gothic » clichés (laughter) are included and heavily repeated in almost all the songs. Fake guttural voices, cheap synthesizers, screams from the deep night, stinking bats and so on... Enough is enough ! Of course most of the songs date back to The Cure’s trilogy era : A forest, Cold, Pornography, The figurehead, The hanging garden, and also other dark songs like Disintegration, Untitled or Lullaby. We really wonder how songs like The walk or Lovesong have been included in this album... This record is still widely available in record shops, but you should really spend your money for something else.

One, A forest ; Whispers In The Shadow, Cold ; Artwork, Fascination street ; This Vale Of Tears, Killing an Arab ; XIII, Lullaby ; Puppetland, Lovesong ; Wintermute, Pornography ; Stahlinorgel, The walk ; The Escape, The figurehead ; Morbid Poetry, Push ; The Caves, Just like heaven ; Dichroic Mirror, Jumping someone else’s train ; Stone 588, The hanging garden ; Sofia Run, Untitled ; Decadence, Disintegration.

Disintegrated

The nice sleeve and title of this tribute album speak for themselves : yes, it includes covers from Disintegration only ! Great idea, even before listening to it ! The first impression is good, and fortunately the music too : eleven songs well played in a punk-hardcore mood most people should enjoy. The best tracks are probably the surprising noisy version of Prayers for rain by Compression, the strange experimental electro-acoustic version of Disintegration by Converge, the barely recognizable trash version of Pictures of you by Bad Luck Thirteen Riot Extravaganza (!), the speed-trash-punk cover of Lullaby by Voice Of Reason (2 minutes only !), and the pure hardcore rendition of Untitled by Together We Fall... This is probably a must-have for everyone loving the best album of our favorite band.

Cave In, Plainsong ; Chimaira, Fascination street ; Compression, Prayers for rain ; Another Nothing, The same deep water as you ; Neck, Last dance ; Converge, Disintegration ; Bad Luck Thirteen Riot Extravaganza, Pictures of you ; Home Thirty Three, Homesick ; Together We Fall, Untitled ; Voice Of Reason, Lullaby ; When Fear And Weapons Meet, Closedown.

One thousand screaming children

This American tribute album, which was poorly distributed, compiles eleven tracks by obscure Texan bands (!)... However there are really good covers among them : the general punk-rock mood perfectly suits songs like Jumping someone else’s train by Wiseguy, In between days by Sunfactor or Just like heaven (yes !) by The End Of Julia. On the contrary, electronic experimentations on The blood by The Standards or on Six different ways by The Lollipop Guild are questionable... and dispensable. Worth noting is the beautiful and moving version of Seventeen seconds by Destination Venus and its vibrant female.

Daryl, Boys don’t cry ; Wiseguy, Jumping someone else’s train ; Parker Barrow, Fire in Cairo ; Destination Venus, Seventeen seconds ; The Standards, The blood ; Lust Murder Box, The baby screams ; The Lollipop Guild, Six different ways ; Sunfactor, In between days ; The End Of Julia, Just like heaven ; Level, Lovesong ; unknown artist, I’m a cult hero.

...Imaginary songs

This tribute album was eagerly and long awaited by French fans : it was postponed several times and it was eventually released almost one year late ! First listenings are immediately disappointing. The general mood of the record is « lounge », that is quite dull... However there are some good songs like Seventeen seconds by Lt.No (formerly known as Tétines Noires), Close to me (in French !) by M, a superb explosive version of Give me it by Dominic Sonic, and Three imaginary boys by Mickey 3D. The rest is almost indigestible... For instance, The Little Rabbits destroy Killing an Arab, and Dionysos covers A forest in a rather poor acoustic way. Finally, a very average album — even if the sleeve is nice.

Curtis Newton, A night like this ; M, Close to me ; Lt.No, Seventeen seconds ; Polagirl, Just like heaven ; Apple Jelly, Lullaby ; Tara King TH, Cold ; The Little Rabbits, Killing an Arab ; Mickey 3D, Three imaginary boys ; ELM, Apart ; Dominic Sonic, Give me it ; Yell, Charlotte sometimes ; Dionysos, A forest ; (Tulip), The top ; Migala, Plainsong.

Whisper - The String Quartet tribute to The Cure

Well, this had to happen ! After many other bands, The Cure’s music has also been turned into classical music... This has been long awaited by many fans, and the result is quite good. Famous Cure tracks are soberly played, just like the beautiful Pictures of you built upon a nice bass line, or the timeless melody of Lovesong on a river of violins... We could also praise songs like Lullaby or Hot hot hot !!! and other nice renditions. The final track, Zazen, is an original composition inspired by The Cure’s music : any fan will spot influences from classic Cure songs like Cold or Lovesong. Beautiful.

Lullaby ; Pictures of you ; Boys don’t cry ; Lovesong ; Hot hot hot !!! ; The lovecats ; Bloodflowers ; Maybe someday ; Just like heaven ; Zazen.

Prayers for disintegration

Prayers for disintegration is the very first tribute album from Poland. It is musically diverse and some tracks are even sung in Polish ! Songs like The holy hour, Lullaby or Apart sound interestingly strange because of that unusual choice. The general mood of this tribute is very gothic, but it includes some experimentations in other styles (pop, new-wave, indus, electro), and the whole stuff is quite pleasant to the ear... Worth noting are the metal version of Lovesong by T.H.O.R.N., or the very Siouxsie-like Plastic passion by Eva.

Tres Hombres, The holy hour ; Michelle, Pictures of you ; God’s Bow, Plainsong ; Thule, Lullaby ; Le Fleur, Want ; La Faucheuse, Burn ; eM, To wish impossible things ; Piotr Piekos, Apart ; T.H.O.R.N., Lovesong ; PCM, Fascination street ; Lorien, Fight ; Ania Zachar i Dave Blomberg, Charlotte sometimes ; Usta Bilizowane, The lovecats ; Eva, Plastic passion ; Common Dream, Bloodflowers.

A night like...

Yet another German tribute album with the usual musical diversity : relaxing trip-hop (In your house by Escape With Romeo), electro-indus (Killing an Arab by Behind The Scene and The baby screams by Cat Fud), poor gothic rock (Just like heaven by In Mitra Medusa Inri and A night like this by The Crack Of Doom), electronic pop (Lullaby by Close Encounters and Seventeen seconds by Whispers In The Shadow), sample pillage (M by Convent), imitation of the original version (The figurehead by Sophya), and even fake live recording (yes !) with If only tonight we could sleep by Pilori. The lovecats, turned into an electronic madness by Yendri, is probably one of the best tracks of the album. Note that the record includes All cats are grey by Battery, already available on their album Aftermath. This tribute album is widely available in Europe.

Escape With Romeo, In your house ; Behind The Scene, Killing an Arab ; In Mitra Medusa Inri, Just like heaven ; Close Encounters, Lullaby ; Cat Fud, The baby screams ; Convent, M ; Sophya, The figurehead ; Passion Plastique, The funeral party ; Pilori, If only tonight we could sleep ; Whispers In The Shadow, Seventeen seconds ; The Crack Of Doom, A night like this ; Yendri, The lovecats ; Another Tale, Boys don’t cry ; Sonic Boom vs. Psyche, Charlotte sometimes ; Battery, All cats are grey.

Give me the Cure

18 DC bands try to interpret The Cure. Most of them fail - terribly. Embarrassing boy scout romantics meet awkward guitar pop and pale indie boredom. The few positive exceptions are Edsel, Rollercoaster and... er, that's about it. Another example for the stupidity of tribute compilations

Shudder to Think - shake dog shake / The Ropers - jumping someone else's train / Chisel - six different ways / Eggs - catch / DJ Bootious Maximus - the love cats / Candy Machine - 10:15 saturday night / Glo-Worm - friday i'm in love / Cinnamon Toast - piggy in the mirror / Frodus - killing an arab / Peter Hayes - a night like this / Tuscadero - boys don't cry / Edsel - plastic passion / Mud - the blood / Rollercoaster - all cats are grey / My Life in Rain - pictures of you / Dismemberment Plan - close to me / Jawbox - meat hook / Trampoline - charlotte sometimes

Pink Pig

204 songs, 14 CDs, 872 minutes... Can three numbers sum up this titanic project ? This huge work has been accomplished by a group of South American fans from 1998 to 2000. The goal was simple : to compile cover versions for every Cure song (one band or artist per song) and release them. Of course, the only way to achieve this great idea was the Internet (especially via the well-known American site A chain of flowers). When the project was launched in 1998, 204 bands or artists had to be recruited ! Eventually there were enough candidates.

The tribute was released in 2000 as a limited numbered edition (500 copies only). Musically, it is not up to Cure standards... In other words, we enjoyed the first 30 songs, but the following 174 tracks proved to be quite dull... In fact, most of the bands and artists who contributed to this mega-tribute were formed for the occasion... (Just look at some of their names : Wish 54, Uyea, The Deep Green Eye, Fornever, Voodoo Smile, Spider, The Medics [!] or Dark Wish...).

Logically, musical and production quality is often mediocre, and sometimes ridiculous — for example the awful karaoke version of From the edge of the deep green sea by L. Grodoski, a version that any basic Cure fan could have made using an old tape recorder...

To sum up, this is a splendid object that every serious Cure fan should own because of its unique originality. (To date, there is no tribute like this for any other band in the whole world, even Modern Talking !) Unfortunately, it is quite hard to find now, and its price is

Our Voices

There have been very few bands as influential in our music industry, and indeed to every genre, as The Cure, whether through their melancholic music or the outward appearance of their mastermind, Robert Smith. This year Robert Smith celebrated his 45th birthday and the 34 bands from twelve countries on this compilation join in the celebration with him. Irrespective of the variations in their musical leanings, from classic Gothic Rock to New Wave, from Mediaeval through contemporary Electro, they all feel a bond through and with Robert Smith and The Cure. This compilation is dedicated to a very particular person, a person who made his home deep within our hearts, a person who made a special string vibrate and resonate in so many of us, as well as furnishing us a wellspring of passion and purpose that made us who we are today.
