Sunday In San Diego

Sundays are special days when I can go out and get a coffee and pick up the Sunday paper.    I just like to enjoy a nice,  quiet day in the backyard and soak up the rays of sunlight while reading or working out in the garden,  and today was an even more gorgeous day than yesterday.    It was a perfect sunny day today in San Diego!

Well,  today was no exception.   My wife and I went out for our ritual Sunday morning cup of coffee at the nearby Starbucks.   After hanging out and reading the Sunday paper,  she took me home and as I worked on the computer for while,   she left to finish up her project at the office.

My wife,  believe it or not,  has a deadline on Monday and needed to finish some last minute things.   She was gone for about two hours this afternoon and she'd been stressed out over this entire project.

After spending some serious time on the computer (and in need to get some fresh air)  I spent some time outside,  gardening and sweeping,  trimming the hedges and shrubs,  and watering plants by hand.

By mid-afternoon I had started the barbecue and placed some chicken wings on the grill.   They had been marinating overnight.

My two boys had spent the night at their cousin's house up the street,  which is something they do once or twice per month,  usually on weekends.    My father-in-law came over to help me out by trimming the hedges in the garden,  and he put the finishing touches on my sons' work bench in the backyard.   The workbench is to be used for my sons' "laboratory" experiments...   actually,  my two boys have been inspired by Bill Nye "The Science Guy" on the PBS Channel,  and so now they have their little spot out back for working on simple chemistry experiments.

I actually got a call today for a couple of gigs next week.   A variety band that performs at the Hyatt downtown was interested in using me on drums.   I told them I was interested and we agreed that I would play these two gigs next week to see how everything goes.    Having been out of a job for a couple of weeks,  I was eager to finally get back to playing with a band.

I was able to do some light practicing today on the practice pad.   Nothing too ambitious today,  just some simple paradiddle exercises.   The main thing is to keep it consistent,  practicing everyday.

I refocused on my Zen readings today as well.   I'm trying to focus on the Zen of doing things,  and that's why I've been emphasizing the routines I have been doing:   the gardening,  the chores,  the practicing,  just trying to get into the Zen of performing work as a means of discipline and duty.
