C h r o n i c l e ~ Sunday Afternoons 12:30PM PST At Home In Scripps Ranch I woke up after noon! ...actually, in the afternoon! My only explanation for this was that I was a bit jet-lagged and tired from the trip back to San Diego from Orlando, Florida. I think what really messed with my sleeping pattern was the initial trip to Orlando a few days ago which was the overnight, "red-eye" flight, and the fact that when we had arrived in Orlando at 5:30AM, we hadn't been able to sleep because we had to wait until 1PM for an available room at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, (a result of mis-planning). So, us band members were trying to catch some "ZZZ's" in the lobby of the Wilderness Lodge, amidst the hustle and bustle of people going in and out of this place. Anyway, I think that was a major factor in the disruption of my sleeping patterns lately. Today I found out that while I was asleep, my wife got our older son ready for a christening party, and he was picked up by my Dad around 10:00am. Of course, we were in no condition to attend this party, so it was good that we sent our ten year old son with gift and card to "sub" for us while we stayed home and "rested up" a bit. Today was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. I had no intention of getting out into the world and doing "stuff". My wife and I pretty much agreed that it was a good idea to just stay home all day and read, kick back, and just enjoy our home. ...So, today was a day spent in total vegetation-mode. 1:45PM PST At Home In The Family Room After eating "breakfast", lounging around and reading the Sunday newspaper, I helped my youngest son set up one of his Christmas gifts, a racing car set with racing track. Our family room has a nice southern exposure, which in Winter is very enjoyable when its a nice, sunny day, but very hot during the summer days. Our covered patio looked very inviting this afternoon, but it was quite windy today, so I opted not to go outside. I played with my six year old son for a while, then we decided to put a video into the VCR and watch a movie. After watching "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" yesterday, my six year old son was interested in the next movie, "Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom", so we watched this movie, which took up a good portion of the rest of our afternoon. It was great to watch this movie again... pure entertainment, a Spielberg Classic, and I enjoyed the adventure aspect of this movie very much. It had been years since I had last saw this movie and I watched it with a renewed interest, almost as if I was seeing the movie for the first time. 5:30PM PST At Home In The Kitchen I had some Salmon filets marinating in the fridge. I took them out and baked them in the oven with some of the sauce and some herbs. I steamed some vegetables and cooked some rice, and then prepared some soup. We had a nice home cooked meal for a change. Whenever I'm on the road, I can never fully trust the food I eat as far as the nutritional value is concerned. Food may be sinfully delicious at restaurants, but it's kind of hard to measure how healthy it is, or how much fat content the food contains. Sometimes It's like taking a chance eating out, but when you cook at home, you always know what you're putting into the food, so you can always control the amount of the fat and nutritional value. Anyway, I usually am the one who cooks in the family, and being that I'm going to be home for the next two weeks, I think my wife is really going to love me for it because now I can prepare all these semi-gourmet meals. I become obsessed with a clean kitchen... ...yep, that's right! I'm the kind of husband and dad that makes sure the kitchen and dining area are spotless and clean... pristine! It doesn't matter what the rest of the house looks like, as long as the kitchen and dining area are clean, I am a happy camper. It's sort of my personal obsession at home, which is something my wife obviously likes. I love to wash dishes too! I know it sounds crazy but the ritual of washing dishes (at home, of course) is something I like to do. I guess you could call it "The Zen Of Washing Dishes", but when I'm at home and I have some time on my hands I truly enjoy washing dishes. 07:00PM PST Upstairs In The Computer Room We call our study room the computer room, simply because our Power Mac sits in this room. After checking email and browsing the web I focused on drum practice, so... ...I practiced on the drum pad again, simply going over rudiments, opened to closed. I did a much easier drum practice in comparison to yesterday, when I really when at it because I really felt the inspiration after watching the Buddy Rich video. I did go through a series of improvisational routines and made sure I focused more on technique. Overall, it was a good session. 09:30PM PST At Home, Mainly Upstairs The end of a mostly uneventful day, but a day of total rest and relaxation. All in all, a very pleasant, restful day. Tomorrow my ten year old son goes back to school, and my six year old son will still be on vacation because he goes to a different school that is year-round. The Christmas lights are still on outside our house. I feel like leaving them up longer, but I probably will end up taking them down tomorrow and put everything back to normal. I'm feeling very good right now. Although other members of the band are out of the country scuba diving in Belize, or have stayed in Florida visiting relatives and friends, I've decided to just stay at home and I'm glad I made the decision to rest, get refocused on what I want to do with my musical career, AND, practice, practice, practice on the drums. The whole theme of this two week vacation is "woodshedding on the drums". home
