a poetic journey
about me

TUE      07.07.98             back to los angeles

2:00pm

Nate and I left his place around 2:15pm for The Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles.   We were supposed to load in between 5:30 and 6:00pm and we had to make sure we had enough time just in case the L.A. traffic would be terrible,  as it usually is between 3pm and 7pm.

5:00pm

We arrived at The Hollywood Athletic Club about 5pm with plenty of time to load in.    Apparently we were the first band members here,  so we went down the street to get a bite to eat.   When we got back Warren,  Jaime and Dick had arrived.

6:30pm

By this time I was getting a little restless.   Everyone in the band was here by now,  there was no sound or stage crew yet.   There were risers on stage from last night's gig,  so some of us got together and moved the risers for our benefit.   After everything was moved into position I started to set up my drums.

7:30pm

Soundcheck was pretty much underway.   I found out the sound tech doing the monitors is also a drummer.   He was pretty much in awe with my drumset.   I guess I take my drumset for granted,  but it is one of the most expensive drums you can buy.   They cost me a heck of a lot of money but well worth it.

8:30pm

We were planning to do a video and had hired some video techs to
shoot some footage.   However,  we were kicked off the stage because it was time for swing lessons.   The lady running the lessons was a friend and manager of the swing band Indigo Swing.    I thought she was rather rude and not very understanding.

9:30pm

At downbeat we found out that this same lady giving the swing lessons was also going to announce us.   And right off the bat she starts talkiing about Indigo Swing and that they were going to be at the Hollywood Athletic Club next week.   I thought this was rude again,  plugging another band before introducing the band on stage.   Then she mentioned that it had been a long,  long time since we've played in L.A.   Great,  a little bit of sarcasm too.   I was totally pissed.

10:30pm

Our first break and I was sweating like crazy!   It was so damn hot in the Hollywood Athletic Club and no airconditioning anywhere.   We hung out upstairs in the pool rooms where some of the guys in the band had been shooting some pool earlier.
