Happy Fourth of July to Americans everywhere!

I've been thinking of changing my intent on keeping an online journal.   I know that the focus has been on the band,  yet the band isn't the only thing in my life.   Yes,  the band has been successful and the need to document what has happened to the band is very important.   But I created this journal to document my life and my feelings.   So,  I feel that in future entries,  there may be a shift in emphasis on what's being recorded.    To keep things fresh I shouldn't just keep talking about the band.   Anyone reading this journal may feel that I'm being too repetitive,  always reviewing my drum solos for instance,  or just talking about what has happened at each gig.   Sure,  that may be important,  but I think I'll expand my focus a little,  just for the sake of keeping things fresh and interesting.

I miss my wife and the kids.   Since they went to Santa Barbara to visit my wife's older sister and her family,  it's been pretty empty at the house.    I haven't been sleeping well and this morning I slept at about 5am and woke up at 11:30am.   Weird hours,  but the little trip to the train station right after I came back from Music City threw my body clock out of whack.   Well,  being a musician and playing nights does affect one's sleeping habits anyway.

Visited mom and dad,  drove there in the new car.   I let mom listen to the album I bought yesterday,  Frank Sinatra's "September Of My Years".   I'm really into this album now and I'm surprised I never really found out about it years ago.   This is a great album!    It won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year 1965!   Well,  my mom and I were impressed by the lush string orchestrations,  and Frank's voice,  the man really sings with passion and guts.   It's a superb recording,  sounds excellent and I've been playing it nonstop ever since I bought it yesterday.   I can't wait to tell my wife about it and let her listen to it.   My favorite song so far is "Once Upon A Time".   Boy this song was driving me to tears...   well,  it was trying big time but I didn't break down,  I kept my cool.   Men aren't suposed to cry,  right!

Anyway,  I love this song so much that I had to jot down the lyrics to the song:

    Once Upon A Time

    Once upon a time
a girl with moonlight in her eyes
    put her hand in mine
and said she loved me so
but that was once upon at time
    very long ago

    Once upon a hill
we sat beneath a willow tree
    counting all the stars
    and waiting for the dawn
but that was once upon a time
    now the tree is gone

how the breeze ruffled through her hair
how we always laughed as though
    tomorrow wasn't there
we were young and didn't have a care
    where did it go?

    Once upon a time
the world was sweeter than we knew
    everything was ours
    how happy we were then
but somehow once upon a time
    never comes again

    Once upon a time
    never comes again

What a beautiful yet sad tune.    Frank sure is a master at these orchestrated ballads.   And the emotion he is able to convey through his voice is incredible.   The slight quivering,  the midrange of his voice,  the vibrato;   he really makes it work.   I think this is going to be one of my all-time favorites for a long time.
