Self-Renewal I am focusing on redefining myself as a drummer in a swing band and what my roles are in this position. Ineed to see my place in this NEW swing movement,this SECOND swing era (as I call it), and research theold drummers of that era who actually defined swing. One of my New Year's resolutions is to focus on "Self-Renewal". As a jazz drummer for a popular swing band, I need to find out what my relationship to the public REALLY is, and to focus on redefining myself as a serious jazz drummer, role model and educator for the future. How I'm going to accomplish this, I don't really know, but I know I am committed to changing my image and trying to be a more responsible drummer to the past history of the drums in general, and regard the legacy of the swing drummers from the original swing era as something I would need to pursue with "dedicated fervor". It's one thing to be an accomplished drummer in today's music world... something any drummer needs to strive for, and with a music world that includes retro or neo-swing bands popping up left and right. It's another thing to go back in time and really do the research in order to study the original concepts involved with those early jazz drummers.
