From the experience gained from the "Giant", Flettner next built the Fl-184, an autogyro with a fully enclosed two place cabin. This craft came about from a contract from the RLM to produce three so-called SV-Type autogyros. The Fl-184 was similar in design to most of the autogyros of the day and exhibited a certain similarity to the C 30 autogyro being built under license by Focke-Wulf at that time. The German Navy arranged for the Fl-184 to be evaluated as a shipboard reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft, but shortly before the scheduled evaluation in December of 1936, the sole prototype, D-EDVE, caught fire in flight, crashed and was a complete write-off. As stated before the Fl-184 had a fully enclosed fuselage and tail surfaces, and the 39 ft. 4 3/4 in. diameter rotor employing cyclic pitch control. At the nose was mounted a 140 hp Siemens-Halske Sh 14 radial engine driving a two-blade wooden propeller. |
