An aerodynamically refined development of the B-10, the B-11 was equipped for IFR flight. The flight control system was also more advanced. The cargo section in the center fuselage had a big side door. Flight tests of the first B-11 started in June 1948, with the second one in September. Tests included flight up to 47 minutes with only one engine running. Some vibrations were observed at Vne. An expansive research program was commenced, involving recording of vibrations. During those tests one rotor blade separated (unhappy coincidence of manufacturing defect and minor design error), and pilot K.I.Ponomarev was killed in a crash. After several modifications, including installation of new engines (same series), it was presented in an Aviation Parade. Unfortunately, the favored design of twin-rotor helicopter became "The Flying Banana" (due to less drag), and the transverse design was not used until the enormous Mi-12 came to life. Two examples were built. "History of aircraft construction in the USSR" by
