James R Cann was born to James Cann and Mary Reddingof
Kent County Md in 1809. In March of 1812 his father James
died in the wreck of the sloop Betsy near Baltimore.
In 1826 and in 1831 there are letters at the post officein
Chestertown Md for James Cann.

In September 1833, in the Kent Island Inquirer, JamesR Cann
requests
persons indebted to the late firm of Spencer and Cannto settle
accounts. The R maybe for Redding his mothers maidenname.
Cann & Spencer
Spencer was the owner of the Easton Star and sold hisassets
and moved to a
plantation in the west arround this time. His printsetter
in Easton (not James
Cann) moved to work in Baltimore.
S W Spencer was publisher of Kent Inquirer 1830, KentNews 1840.
James R Cann and Eliza Jane Redding were married in Balto
on
July 16 1833 by minister Frey.

1840s James R Cann and Eliza Jane Cann sold a lot in Baltimore
City. Their 1871 address was 169 Sharp St (today thatis 609
Sharp Street). The house still exists and is one of manyrestored
in the section. Living at that address were also Williamand
Kate
Thomas, and granddaughter Kate.
1880 Census has him and wife living at 210 sharp street
with son
Benjamin Cann, 31; Kate Thomas, daughter; and James Edward
Cann,
grandson.
1871, 1879 and 1880 WOODS DIRECTORY says he is a printer,
1880
Census says he is a pointer ((caulker? misprint!)).
James R Cann died 8 March 1881, age 72.
His son Benjamin B Cann died 15 June 1882, age 32.
James R Cann and his son Benjamin are buried in lot 112Whatcoat,
Louden Park Cemetary, there are no stones or markersfor James
or
Ben. The Whatcoat section section where only membersof the
Whatcoat Methodist Episcopal Church are buried. Alsoit is
said
that after Whatcoat Church was closed graves at the church
were
moved here.
March 6 1881 Death Certifcate gives cause of death ascancer
of Liver,
of 5 months duration, it also says he was born in KentCo
Md, lived in
Baltimore for 40 years.

Benjamin B Cann was born 1850 in Baltimore to James Rand
Eliza
Jane Cann. Mildred Culler writes: "that Bud said theycame
from
Southern Maryland and didn't talk much about their family.
It was
his impression it had something to do with the CivilWar."
(I later found that it was the Weems who were fromSouthern
Anne Arundel County MD.)
In some the old record books I see lots of Canns in Anne
Arundel
county, and that is considered Southern Md to some. There
are few
if any Canns in other parts of Southern MD mentioned,except
one
in Charles County, but that doesn't mean they weren'tthere.
A
good guess would be to look in Anne Arundel. There werelots
of
unrest and troops running around there. The State legislative
was
imprisoned to prevent them from succeeding from the union.
And
down in other parts of the southern Md were troops, prisoner
of
war camps etc. Southern Md was held at gunpoint. On April
19,
1861, the first blood shed in the war was on streetsof Baltimore
at the inner harbor near James R Cann Home. Twelve private
citizens were shot and killed during a demonstation there.
Benjamin was 11 at the time.
1870 Census puts Benjamin with wife Mary and son Bertnard
(1) in
Household of Prescilla Perry in Ward 15. 23 others living
at same
address. He is a salesman.
1872 Benjamin was listed in "Woods Directory" at 176 S
Paca
Street and was working as a clerk.
1880 Census & Woods Directory 1879 finds Ben living
with his father and mother
on Sharp Street. Mary (Molly) is divorced and lives withBert
(11)
on Stricker Street many blocks away. Ben is listed onthe
census
as married. No recond has been yet found of a divorce.
1880, Only 3 blocks from Benjamin is another Mary Cann
living in
Saloon with daughter Maggie (13) and working as a cookfor
the
Hotel next door. Her son James Edward Cann is living
at his grand parents and Benjamin. She was wife of Ben'sbrother
Edward R Cann who is not found at this time. He may bedead.
Mary
also appears to lie about her age to the census taker.
June 14, 1882 Death Certificate gives birthplace as Kent
Co Md,
married, died of ?dropsey? 48 hours. No referances todivorce
could
be found in Baltimore City or county records.
