1870 Census gives his name as Bertrand Cann. He is found
with his
father and mother in Ward 15, Benjamin & Mary Cann.
1880 census Bertie Cann age 11 is found with his motherMolly
Cann at 672 Stricker alley in the 19th ward of Baltimore.
Brothers Howard and Homer Cann were not found in 1880census.
Uncle Bert and Alice ran a resturant where boarders from
Helen
Price's rooming house ate. After Alice died, Bert married
Helen,
his sister-in-law(his brother's wife). He also took inVera
Cann's Children for a time.

Twins Howard & Homer Cann were born 1871 in Baltimore
to
Benjamin B Cann and Molly. They were Living on Paca Street
at the
time. Howard and Homer are not found in the 1880 census.At
that
time Molly was divoiced and living on Stricker Alleywitheldest
son Bert and Mary Hodges a widow. Benjamin was livingon Sharp
street with his parents.
Virginia said that Howard Cann came to Brandon Shoresto
spend
the summer with them and to be chaperon before HowardElmer
and
Virginia were married in 1939. She said it was the firsttime
that Elmer had really get to know his father.
Howard is buried in the Prospect Hill Cementery on S George
St.
in Downtown York PA. He is in Lot117 Section S whichis the
Hickson Family plot (his 3rd wife). She died in Juneof 1939,
Just before his visit to Brandon Shores.
First buried in this plot was a baby sister (Fannie Virginia)
to
his wife Mary E Hickman in 1868. Then father, WilliamHickson
in
1881, and mother Rebecca Hickson in 1893.
They were strangly arranged in the plot taking up several
plots
instead of just one.
This explains why Howard is found buried in York PA. It
is that
he was buried next to his last wife in her family's plot.
He apparently lived in Baltimore MD , then in New York
City,
and later in Lebanon PA with Mary E Hickman Cann.

I have talked with Dorothy Cann Arenz in Florida... and
she IS very
interested in learning more about the early life of herfather
(Carlton and his parents ... Bertram B. Cann Sr. and...(we
...suspect) Alice McBee Cann).
Here's some info for your files (mostly from "Dot"):
Dorothy...
Shirley Cann Hunter.
Carlton DeVere Cann and Lily Gorman Cann are buried inWoodlawn
Memorial Park, Easton, MD.
Carlton attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (probably
graduating
in 1908) and is believed to have graduated from LehighUniversity
in
the Class of 1912. (If Carlton was in the "A" courseat Poly,
he
might have been in Poly's Class of 1909... because "A"course
students
at Poly ...often completed the course work at engineering
colleges in
three years instead of the normal four years.)
Dot remembers ....hearing about (I guess).. a "grandfather"
DeVere
from her father ... so this DeVere must have been Carlton's
grandfather. Dot says there was a grand DeVere home inCatonsville
named "Windsor ???", which must have been the home ofthis
grandfather
DeVere as well as two spinster DeVere sisters..... (There
are
more questions to ask Dot....because I do not know ifanyof
these
people were alive in Dot's youth
Dot says that Randolph Miller actually lived with theCarlton
and Lily
(and Dot and Shirley) at their home = 4401 Penhurst Avenue,
Forest
Park. Dot believes Randolph Miller was a "half-brother"of
her
grandmother ...i.e. a relation via Alice's, mother. (Note:
according to your Loudon Park records, Randolph's wife,Mary
Miller,
died in 1918... so Randolph was a single man thereafter.)
A 1921
Polk's shows Randolph's home address as 4401 PenhurstAve.
....as well
as Bertram B's home as well as Carlton D's home....
(It was an accident that I picked up that particularPolk's...)
3) I went to the Maryland Archives last week (my first
visit) ...got
a copy of the death certificate for the widow MargaretAnn
McBee ( at
57 years, 1 month 24 days = June 29, 1832) on August22, 1889.
This
agrees with your data. (I think you and I agreed on thepossibility
she is/was the mother of Alice ??? Cann and maybe someothers
in the
burial area...
I also tried to get a copy of the "Alice Cann" death
certificate..... which was indexed...for d of July 30,
1922 (one day earlier than your records??). However,the microfilm
was over exposed, especially through the middle sectionof
the
document.... and much of the data cannot be read. Themicrofilm
record only contains a "Cann" ...no first or middle name...
In
the area to enter a husband the only letter which I canperceive
is a
"B" (in caps). The date of birth is August 27, 1867 andthe
age is 54
years, 11 months, ??? days (and that would agree witha birth
date
of 8/27/1867).
There is no clear notation of the name of her father ..but
the
birthplace of her father is Baltimore Co., Md . The notation
for
the maiden name of her mother is evident as "Devere"and the
birthplace of her mother is Baltimore (City), MD. "Bertram
B. Cann"
is the "informant" with an address at 4401 Penhurst Avenue.

When Brother Elmer Married Virginia, Aunt Vera and Uncle
Will
Behrens were living on a 28 ft cabin cruiser named TNT.Virginia
purchased TNT so that Vera and Will could purchase theirhouse
on
Stoney Creek near Baltimore.
Vera was skilled musically and was able to play the piano
and
later the organ by ear. She played for the lutheran church
nearby. After Vera died Uncle Will also learned to playthe
organ by
teaching himself.

because he gave the
the name William Dare Moberly. Hehad forgot
or didnt know his
name was Wilbert until Mildred toldhim.
Dare was very interested in booksand music
and has installed in
a very elaberate stereo System inthe basement
of his home where
he spends much of his time.

Howard E Cann Jr was Born in Baltimore Md and
Graduated from St Pauls School in 1959, then
attended University of Virginia School of Architecture
from
1959-1965. He worked as a project manager estimator for a
general
contractor in Baltimore from 1965 to 1970. Part time
from 1956 he worked in family business H E Cann Company.In
1969
he founded Bay Waterproofing Company, a waterproofing and
caulking subcontractor. In 1971 he accepted Jesus as
Lord and
Savior and shortly after moved to Westover on the Eastern
Shore
of Maryland. In 1974 he began involved in part time mission
work
in Haiti. In 1975 he was severely injured in an airplane
accidentwhile
flying missionaries to Haiti. In 1980 he and his family
movedto
Haiti to translate and show the Jesus Film in Creole all
over
the Island with Land Rover and generator. In 1984 here turned
to
Westover and while reopening Bay Waterproofing Company he
worked
at the health department and with the Baptist Church helping
the
Haitian migrant workers. For a short time pastored a Haitian
Church on the migrant camp in Westover. He continues to do
architectural drafting and computer maintainance in the local
area. Presently he is involved in the design and construction
of a
460 student Christian School in Somerset County. He has four
daughters, last finishing college this year. Since 1985 he
has
been a licensed amateur radio operator (W3MRX) and has served
as
RACES Officer for the Somerset County for the past 12years.
