Jeannie Owen

In 1975 at the age of 12 years old, my parents moved my family from our birthplace, Southern California to British Columbia, Canada. To help with the transition of leaving friends and family behind, my parents said that I could get a puppy - the breed to be my choice. Having known for several years beforehand what kind of dog I wanted, I began the search for my Keeshond.

I started making phone calls to the ads I found in the California newspapers and in one phone call I swear I spoke to Eva Gabor, "darling....." she said in her distinct accented voice, "if I had puppies I v-would not sell them".... I hung up after that call with my mouth wide open in surprise and amazement. Shortly thereafter, I had my first Keeshond puppy and off to Canada we moved.

It was in my early 20s that I began looking at bloodlines and pedigrees and the Flakkee line immediately caught my attention. I soon began corresponding with Porter Washington and in 1984 he sent me my first show quality Kees. "Kasey" finished her Canadian championship and then was sent back to Porter Washington to be bred to Ch. Flakkee Hi-Lo Jack. Two puppies were born from that litter and in very limited showing, Keesnight's Hurricane Force took BOB in a Group 6 Specialty and the same day went BPIG in a Specialty at the age of 8 months. He was not fond of the show ring and retirement came early for him.

I have owned and shown several other Keeshonds, moved back to California to "find myself" and have stayed in touch with the Keeshond world where ever my journeys have taken me. I have been a member of the KCBC since 1990 and remain a member even though I now live in Alberta with my husband and two sons.

I enjoy riding my Quarter horse in my spare time and watching the antics of my miniature horse. I have recently tried night photography, especially of the Aurora Borelis or Northern Lights, and I also enjoy hiking and generally everything involving the outdoors.
