Glady Gates - Maritimes
I received my first Keeshonden on May 8, 1977. He was given to me as a Mother's day present. Chinook was to be only a pet but I was bitten by the dog show bug and he finished his Championship at 8 1/2 months of age. He received his first Best In Show on Mother's day, May 10, 1981.
My main interest in the breed is having them as loving family companions but I also love showing my own Kees in Conformation. I have owned and bred Best in Show winners and some of Canada's top winning Keeshonden. I also took part in obedience years ago and put a C.D. degrees on two of my males, Multi BIS Can Ch Kendol's Chinook of Gates, CD CHOF and his son Multi BIS Can Ch Seawind's Lit'l Bit O'Wrock, CD CHOF.
I joined the Keeshond Club of Canada in January 1978 and have held the position of Maritimes Representative in the Keeshond Club of Canada since that time. My main interest in the Club is to keep the members across Canada informed of what is going on regarding Keeshonden on the east coast of Canada and looking forward to holding the Canadian National in the year 2003.
I am a member of the Halifax Kennel (All Breed) Club and the Canadian Kennel Club.
I love gardening and enjoy the outdoors (if there are no mosquitoes or black flies). I also enjoy reading books regarding dogs, gardening and birds. My time is also taken up by corresponding with friends from all parts of the world through the internet. I also love to have company come to visit and spend a lot of time preparing for special people.
I have enjoyed judging Puppy Sweepstakes at the Heritage Trail Keeshond Club Specialty in April 1986 in Ashland, Mass and the Buckeye Keeshond Club Specialty in December 1998 in Cleveland, Ohio. At home in Nova Scotia I judged Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at the Norwegian Elkhound Specialty in August 1999, the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever Specialties in 1997 and many all-breed Sanctioned Matches and Fun Matches. I was invited back to do the Sweepstakes at the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever Specialty shows in September 2001 in Halifax, and in April 2002, I accepted an invitation to judge the Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at the Keeshond Club of America National Specialty in Frederick, Maryland. This was one of the biggest (doggy) thrills of my life and an experience I will never forget.
