WELCOME
TO CAMP WIRRIBARA
Camp
Wirribara is nestled among tall pines on the
side of a hill on Little Clear Lake in Boulter Township, about 30
kilometres east of Powassan, Ontario (getting
there).
In the late 1940s
and early 1950s the area was reforested with red pine.
The Ministry of
Natural Resources, then the Department of Lands and Forests, built this
camp for Junior Rangers whose mandate then, was to plant trees.
By the mid-1970's
the task was completed and the camp was closed.
Scouts Canada Nipissing District purchased the camp from the MNR in
1980 and renamed it Camp Wirribara.
Boulter Township is
a forest access area, just outside the northwest corner of Algonguin
Park, that offers a wide range of activity opportunities such as
swimming, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking and snowmobiling.
PINE
NEEDLE SHANTY BUNKHOUSE
Hards Hall stands
at the water's edge. It consists of a mess hall and a kitchen equipped
with propane gas lights, a propane gas grill, a propane gas fridge,
propane gas heaters and a propane gas water heater.
The mess is furnished with six tables and 50
folding
chairs. At meal
times the mess hall can accommodate 40 hungry campers.
A 480-square-foot
deck was added to the building a few years ago. It has ramps so it can
be accessed by wheelchairs and it offers a beautiful view of the lake.
As you make your
way up the hill, you will see two bunkhouses. Both are equipped with
propane gas lights and heaters and a total of 50 bunks. Each bunkhouse
has a bedroom equipped with two beds, and the lower bunkhouse has an
annex furnished with four bunks. These are ideal for leaders' quarters.
The upper bunker
house is connected to the washroom by a deck. This makes the bunkhouse
and the washroom wheelchair accessible.
SLEEPY
HOLLOW BUNKHOUSE
The washroom is
divided into two sections (girls and boys), and equipped with five
flush
toilets, six wash basins and two showers. It also is equipped with
propane gas lights and a propane gas water heater.
Lake water is
pumped into a reservoir on the side of the hill, at a higher altitude
than the washroom and gravity-fed to the washrooms and the kitchen. The
water is untreated and not approved by the Ministry of Health. Potable
water must be brought in.
BP House is a
two-bedroom cottage situated across the road from the main camp.
It is also equipped with propane gas lights,
heater and range, and furnished with a kitchen
table and chairs. There is a sofa and two armchairs in the living room
and bunks in the bedrooms
