Iris

My translation of the Greek Goddess of the rainbow, Iris. I always thought the poor thing was severly underated as a deity. Anyone who makes rainbows is A-OK in my books. :) The rainbow was seen as a sign that harvests would be plentiful, so farmers would gladly pay homage to her. She also acted as messenger to Hera, I suppose she was like a female version of Hermes in that respect.
Anyway, I put this one together in about five days for a Community Art Prize. The co-ordinator told me that they had only very few entries for the youth category (prize= $1000), and could I please enter? Well, boys and girls, how could I refuse? I sketched out a few possibilities- and painted the groundwork in cheap student's gouache. (I loooove that paint!). My lovely friend Justin helped me to scan the pic and stitch it together in photoshop, and then I proceeded to "sparklify" the pic with my usual method-- lots of dodge, burn and multiply, and many *many* layers. I was quite pleased with the final result... but not *entirely* happy. I got the final product printed out, and seeing that the artwork was overdue, I whacked it into a cheap, overbearing frame that I had at home instead of getting it done professionally. :P Of course I did not win. :S But I got the warm fuzzy glow of knowing I had done something innovative (for MY hometown, at least!^^) by submitting an artwork that had been digitally manipulated.
