Samuel Clemmens (Mark Twain)
Mark Twain(Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri,  He did not move to Hannibal until 1839.
The name "Mark Twain" came from his days as a riverboat pilot.  The lookout would let down a "sounding weight" which could be a rope with some type of markers placed at every fathom.  If the water was two marks deep, it would safely float the large steamboats.  The lookout when checking the depth and obtaining a reading of two marks would yell out "Mark Twain", Twain meaning two.  So therefore "mark twain" meant "safe water" or ":safe passage".
