WHAT ADVANTAGES WILL I HAVE IF I JOIN WITH THE CALIFORNIA PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES LOCAL UNION?
The Union provides you with the technical know-how and economic strength to bargain effectively with your employer regarding your wages, working conditions and job security.

In addition, you gain expert representation to intercede on your behalf, legal and research services and the backing of 14 million member AFL-CIO.

WHAT ABOUT UNION DUES?
Yes, the Union charges nominal dues. It stands to reason that no organization can represent you without finances. You pay to support your church and schools. Why not your Union?

WHEN WILL I BE REQUIRED TO PAY DUES?
Only after a contract has been successfully negotiated, approved by the employees, and duly signed.

WHAT DOES THE UNION HAVE IN COMMON WITH OUR EMPLOYEES?
Local Union # 2345 represents employees at many non-profit agencies. In addition, CalPro is a local union of the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades and is affiliated with the powerful AFL-CIO, which represents over 14 million members.

WHY SUPPORT THE LOCAL UNION?
The Union is an organization built by the members, for the members. An employee can not successfully bargain with an their employer alone, but when employees join together and bargain collectively they are assured of maximum benefits. Employees can point with pride to the benefits they have received because the union represents them at the collective bargaining table.

WHO RUNS THE UNION?
You do. The members run Local Union affairs democratically, elect Local Union officers and delegates by secret ballot and decide important Local Union policies and actions by majority vote.

WHO DETERMINES MY WAGES AND WORKING CONDITIONS?
You determine the value of your services and the conditions under which you work and your proposal is presented to your employer by the negotiating committee. Any Agreement coming out of the negotiating sessions cannot become effective until it is ratified by the employees. The negotiating committee is made up of workers elected by you and professional negotiators from the Union.

WILL I LOSE ANY BENEFITS AND PRIVILEGES I NOW ENJOY IF I JOIN WITH THE UNION?
A Union contracts protect employees from losing any benefits and privileges. A typical Union clause reads as follows: ampquotThe Employer agrees that all conditions of employment relating to wages, ours of work, overtime differential, fringe benefits and general working conditions shall be maintained at the highest minimum standards in effect at the time of signing of this Agreement and the conditions of employment shall be improved wherever specific provisions for improvement are made elsewhere in this Agreement.

WHO WE ARE:

The California Professional Employees, CalPro Local Union # 2345, IUPAT, AFL-CIO was formed in 1988 to represent employees in non-profit gencies, social service agencies, city and school employees, as well as other employees throughout the State of California.

AFFILIATIONS:

The California Professional Employees is a local union of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, (IUPAT). The Brotherhood was formed in 1887 and was one of the founding unions of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) which later merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). Today, the AFL-CIO represents over 14 million workers throughout the United States. The AFL-CIO was the prime sponsor of the new Family Leave Act, as well as many other important legislation for working families.

The union is also affiliated with other various County and Statewide labor organizations. These assorted labor bodies are helpful in providing valuable support with elected officials and other Government agencies.

BACKGROUND:

Today, the California Professional Employees represents hundreds of workers in California. The Union represents a wide variety of employees from non-profit agencies, social service agencies, city and school district amp classified employees to Day Care, Head Start workers to JTPA employees.

With these employers the union has successfully negotiated contracts, won numerous grievances and arbitrations. In addition, the union has won unfair labor practice charges against these employers.

RESOURCES:

The union is represented by the one of the best law firms in the State. The law firm is staffed with attorneys who specialize in the practice of labor law. This law firm assists in training shop tewards, handling grievances and arbitrations, as well as, Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) and National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) related matters.

On the union staff there are professional negotiators to assist members in getting good contract. The union has a toll free # 800 number to serve its members (outside of the LA area), (800) 38-UNION.
