Bugs & Workarounds

Caesar III is an excellent game with notable low system requirements. However, it has some bugs that you should be aware of before they get a chance to frustrate you.

  • Disappearing ballistas
This most annoying bug is caused by rotating the map. Rotating the map creates another bunch of problems, which I can confirm for the Mac version. Impressions has never been able to fix this well-known bug. The only workaround that I know: NEVER ROTATE THE MAP.

  • Infinite fighting
If you see a prefect fighting versus a native/gladiator/ghost infinitely, you have discovered this bug. The problem is that your peace rating will not rise any more. This bug happend to me just once, in Carthago. Save often, with different file names.

  • Tax overlay
'Payed tax' in the tax overlay and in the house info window is calculated based on the current tax rate, it does not show the amount of really collected taxes, as it falsely claims to do.

  • Can't delete a house
I don't know what causes this bug. But it seems to me that 2x2 houses that are only partly within the range of a fountain have this problem more often. Evolving the house, or ensuring it is entirely covered by fountain services, can sometimes solve the problem.

  • Wrong prices
Caesar III doesn't reset prices when you restart a map with the 'Replay' menu item or when you start a new construction kit map. Knowing this, it's usually better to avoid 'Replay' and to load an older saved game with correct prices before you start a construction kit map.

  • Display bugs
At times, it happens that Casesar III displays a wrong house type. Info-clicking on the house in question will always tell you the correct type. When the house devolves or evolves, the display usually gets updated correctly. Also, display bugs appear sometimes near or on top of earthquake cracks. Caesar III has some more bugs of this kind, the good news is that they are indeed purely visual and don't affect game play.

  • Crashing movies (Mac only)
Some movies, e.g. the intro movie, Neptune's wrath movie, the earthquake movie, and the final win game movie (when you made it to Caesar level) are crashing the Mac hard. This problem occurs probably only with some of the distributed CDs. Whenever such a movie starts, simply click it away before it crashes. You can use the free utility program "Smacker for Mac" from RAD Game Tools to play all movies without a crash. Download it from their homepage.

  • Problems loading a saved game
The load game dialog can display only a limited number of saved games (100?). Solution for Macs: remove some saved games from Caesar III's 'data' folder. Saved games from PC and Mac are originally not interchangeable. However, Mac users can convert PC saved games into Mac saved games and vice versa with C3 Converter.

Caesar III has some more bugs, some are considered game features by now, like the famous multiple barracks trick.
