Here's a little Geography Lesson. US 167 between Opelousas and Ville Platte is the eastern border of the Louisiana Prairie at this point. West of Ville Platte, La.10 roughly defines the northern border of the prairie.
Looking at the old store just south of Ville Platte reminded me of this fact. It is on the west side of the road above Plaisance. Previous routes of the Mississippi mark the country  to the east. Immediately, Bayou Boeuf and Cocodrie water that area.
In my day, I've probably passed the old store a hundred times. I've stopped and taken a few distant pictures and then moved on. This time I decided to go a bit further. There is a break in the front left window into which I stuck my camera. The pictures came out very dark but digital pictures can be tweaked. Below are some of the tweaks.
A lady's shoe display was still by the window.
Not a stiletto heal.
When we moved into the Breaux Bridge area house, it was heated by two gas heaters, same brand and model which came in that box on the top shelf. Great heaters. They are insulated on top so a fan can sit there and disperse the warm air. Turn off the fan and back up to it for an instant shot of heat. Try that with your central air. One amenity of life has flown away and we are left with vents to wish at.
The country store was also a cafe. I can see the farmers gathering for coffee on a cold morning  or catching a bite to eat at lunch time.  I bet they had pie. It was also a hardware store surving the community.  Which community, I'm not really sure. Belair Cove is to its rear. Frilot Cove is toward Plaisance. Farms are everywhere.
I guess those hanging boxes are lights.
A muddy shoe and a plate ar on the couter.  8o wattt something was in the box.
You know that anything that was any good went out the now boarded up front windows. Such a shame.
