Bacillinum, Ringworm
and YOU
~ Ringworm~
Most breeders/pet owners have either had fungus outbreaks (ringworm) or will have at some time in the future. Nobody wants to talk about it. Noone wants to admit it.
Ringworm/fungus outbreaks can strike the most conscientious breeders. And yet we cringe at the thought of ringworm. Why? Ringworm is a fungus ... so is athlete's foot. It's not caused by dirty environment, dirty people or pets. It can be healed more quickly on people because we aren't as "hairy" and while it's healing can be easily hidden with a Band-aid. So, why does the mention of ringworm cause breeders/pet owners to become so unnerved? Simply because it's so hard to get rid of, and generally very expensive in terms of medications, disinfectants, as well as missed cat/dog shows, lost sales, and time.
Who's susceptible to ringworm? Young children, the elderly, and any person whose immune system is compromised. When we're discussing pets, it's the same groups: kittens/puppies, older pets and any pet whose immune system is compromised.
On a fur-bearing mammal, such as a cat/dog, ringworm can get out of control almost before you notice it. Whether you're a pet owner or breeder, do you regularly check a pet's bottom, paw pads, claws or between the toes every day? These are four great hiding places for new lesions that you may not notice until you see an outbreak on the ears, tail or extremities. Ringworm can manifest anywhere on a pet's body. Lesions on tails heal much more slowly because that it is the coolest area, temperature-wise, of a pet's body as well as the fact that every time the pet "swishes or wags" its tail, causing the lesion on the tail to break open and spread.
Have you ever had a newborn litter of kittens and not known that the momcat might be a carrier until you found bald spots on the kitten's face (that weren't there the night before) and then wondered how you're going to treat a tiny kitten? Most products aren't safe for kittens or puppies under 6 weeks of age. By that time, left untreated, you'll have an almost bald kitten or puppy.
Ringworm/fungus spores can be contracted in many ways. They float in the air. They are abundant on tomato plants and in the "deposits" in the dirt your child plays in outside. The spores can come in on your clothes or your indoor/outdoor pets, just like fleas and ticks do, or they can come in through your window screens. You can unknowingly bring fungus home from a pet shop, cat or dog show, or a potential buyer can bring it to you on their hands, clothes or shoes. And it will drive you crazy trying to pinpoint the source of exposure. One comforting thought is that more children contract ringworm from playing in the dirt than from playing with a cat or dog.
Experts conservatively extimate there are over one hundred strains of ringworm fungus. Certain strains of fungus are indigenous to particular areas of the country. There are mild forms, extremely aggressive forms, forms that WILL fluoresce and forms that WON'T fluoresce. Fungus can take up to 45 days to break into lesions, depending on the strain.
Ringworm can be breathed into the lungs or it can lay on individual cat or dog hairs. The external microspores are spread to other parts of the body via the hairs themselves, the pet's claws, pets grooming themselves or each other and shedding. Once they reach the lungs, the spores migrate to the bloodstream. When the pet has lesions, the spores have "taken root" in the pet's system.
The health of the pet's immune system has a lot to do with whether the pet breaks with lesions or becomes a carrier. A carrier is one that harbors spores but never actually breaks with ringworm, while their litters or other pets they're around do. Carriers are hard to trace since you never see the telltale ringworm, yet you're repeatedly battling ringowrm outbreaks without being able to trace an exposure source.
Spores can lay dormant in your carpet for years and cause periodic outbreaks if the proper host comes along. If you're regularly seeing outbreaks in the spring and fall, and you have carpet, you've probably found the culprit. Spores can also lay dormant within your pet without ever breaking into lesions IF the pet has a nominally healthy immune system.
Some pets stress easily and constantly break out. Some only stress when pregnant or ill. Herein lies the vicious cycle of ringworm: Illness depresses the immune system and a depressed immune system allows illness to take hold. Look at the stress factors in your pet's life. Being in heat, being bred or pregnant can be a stress factor, as can a change in the family lifestyle, moving, going to the vet, being bathed, getting their claws clipped, a new pet in the home, a change in food ... any number of things.
~ Bacillinum~
Bacillinum (tuberculinum) is a homeopathic single ingredient remedy that works from the inside out to cure ringworm. It works for suspected as well as known carriers by causing the pet, who's harboring ringworm spores, to break with lesions that then heal.
Bacillinum is a healthier and safer alternative than strong medications or chemicals. The potency is determined by the degree to which the original substance (called the Mother Tincture) has been diluted and successed. If a remedy is simply diluted, by mixing it in water, its potency stays the same. However, if this diluted mixture is successed (usually 100 times), IE held in one hand and rapped against the palm of the other hand, then its potency increases.
An "X" potency is diluted in a 1:9 ratio of remedy to alcohol or water. A "C" potency is diluted in a 1:99 ratio. The higher the number, the higher the energy released in the potency. Usually remedies below 30 are considered low potencies; those between 30 and 200 are medium, and remedies of 200 and above are high potency.
Ringworm is an extremely resistant fungus. This is due to the fact that even if you heal the active lesions (treating the symptoms without treating the cause), the spores invariably are retained within the body, just waiting to break again during periods of stress.
Which strength of Bacillinum works for ringworm? Only a 200C potency of Bacillinum Tuberculinum is effective against fungus and will not cause any ill-effects to the pet.
This is NOT a magic cure-all. Homeopathics is a safe alternative medicine compared to medications like Griseofulvicin that can cause birth defects and liver damage. Homeopathics works more slowly than a 10 day treatment of antibiotics or a 6 week to 4 month treatment of Griseofulvicin, but you get long term results. Resist the temptation to increase the amount, thinking that will make it work better or faster. It doesn't. In homeopathics, MORE is not better. You'll find that once you start your pets on Bacillinum, they will usually start breaking with lesions (or severe dandruff) within four days.
Most homeopathic remedies are available in liquid form as well as tablet, powder or pillule. I use and distribute Bacillinum (tuberculinum), liquid (preserved in alcohol), 200C potency in various sizes. There is no expiration date. The only precautionary measure is to keep it in the amber bottle and don't expose it to direct light.
A 240 ml bottle (8 oz.) equals 240 cc, enough to treat 120 gallons of water.
The protocol for the above strength and form is simply this:
Medicate the drinking water (course of treatment - 3 months):
Bacillinum is safe for newborn and nursing puppies and kittens. Follow alternative treatment #2 for litters whose moms are suspected carriers, litters who have broken with lesions or litters whose moms are already being treated.
The average course of treatment is 3 months, sometimes less, sometimes more. This is dependent upon your individual pets as well as the strain of fungus you're dealing with and the area of the country you live in. You MUST watch your pet for the healing process of the lesions as well as new outbreaks. Let the negative toothbrush culture be your guide as to when to discontinue treatment.
While the pets are on the Bacillinum treatment, do not treat the lesions topically with another medication, EXCEPT for Colloidal Silver. Other topical treatments tend to push the fungus back into the body. However, DO bathe frequently (every 5-7 days) with a gentle shampoo or EZ Groom Crystal White to keep any superficial spores from being transmitted.
The point of homeopathics is to get it out and gone forever. If you're tempted to "treat" the lesions, remove the crusties and broken hair areas instead, being sure to burn any infected hair after carefully removing it from the environment. Even "dead" infected hair on or surrounding lesions will continue to fluoresce and will result in a positive culture. And then swab Colloidal Silver onto the area where the lesion is.
While on the medicated water or one of the alternative methods, if the pet is a carrier, it will either break with obvious lesions or the worst case of dandruff you've EVER seen. This is GREAT! and exactly what you want. It means the Bacillinum has found a carrier of ringworm and is now working to rid the body of the spores. Once the course of treatment is finished, the pet will no longer be a carrier.
And if perchance, you have a pet who has absolutely no spores whatsoever in its body, the Bacillinum will do no harm.
For a remedy that works so well, Bacillinum hasn't been readily available nor marketed at a reasonable price in America. In Canada, however, it is readily available and reasonably priced.
We import Bacillinum from a homeopathic laboratory in Canada in several sizes: 2 ounce, 4 ounce, 8 ounce and 16 ounce.

~YOU~
Once the pet has completed the course of treatment, the pets will not get ringworm again. This last statement is conditional upon YOU, the breeder or owner.
Do you ...
You MUST treat the environment in conjunction with treating the pets. You can carry spores on your clothes, hands, shoes from the isolation area into the rest of your kennel or into your home. Cats and dogs DO shed as well as roll on the carpet, climb the cat tree, lay on the couch or bed. The spores, attached to the hair, WILL fall onto your floor, couch and carpet. Then a pet comes along and sits or lays in that same spot. Vacuum often. Get a good disinfectant with fungicidal properties and spray or fog the areas. Keep furniture, carpet, sleeping areas, litter boxes, cages, drapes, mini-blinds, walls and baseboards clean and regularly disinfected.
Ringworm does NOT have to be a life sentence, but it can certainly feel that way if you aren't willing to treat the environment as well as the animal, in addition to taking precautions such as the ones outlined above. You cannot assume that other people will let you know that they have a ringworm outbreak, so that YOU can take precautions. YOU have to be the one who initiates the precautionary methods to keep your pets free of fungus.
