Hey Key Clubbers:

A little KC update:

I realize that our last meeting was cancelled because of Prospective Parent Night, but we will be meeting on Thursday, March 2nd. We absolutely MUST finish elections (Treasurers and Editors) so please be prompt!

District Convention will be from March 24 26 at the lovely Kutchers Country Club in Monticello, NY. We still have a few spots open, so please bring in your check for $124 made out to the Riverdale Kiwanis Foundation. DCON is absolutely amazing- reserve your seat today!!!

Ok guys- enjoy your week off! Stay warm and happy =)

Hey guys!
Congrats to all on making committee chairs! Yay!
Now we must get down to business. The first committee chairs meeting will be this Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 in front of the auditorium after 9th period. This is also the same date as the second (late) SING performances, so if you're planning to stay for those, this meeting should be no problem. However, if you are not staying for SING, don't worry, this meeting will be brief.
At the meeting, I will be handing out lists of contact info for each committee as well as discussing the responsibilities of being a committee chair in detail.
Note: Unless you have emailed me prior with a valid excuse, I expect to see all of you Wednesday afterschool.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Yours in Caring and Service,
~Lena

Hey Key Clubbers!

Just a quick reminder about next weeks elections:

We will be starting the meeting promptly, as in 3:43 (heheits a palindrome) PLEASE arrive on time! We have many candidates running and each one has a 2 minute speech and 3 minutes of questioning. There will also be drop-downs, where candidates who did not win their first position run again for another one. All in all, it could take a long time, and we want to be speedy and efficient, so that we can finally finish elections!

Thanks everyone- see you next week!

Hey Key Clubbers!

Ok, two brief but very IMPORTANT announcements:

First, I am sorry to have to say that the Winter Fest 2006 has been cancelled due to the unseasonably warm weather. I know that many of you already sent us RSVPs and were looking forward to the event, but unfortunately this was beyond our control. Thats ok though, because we will have plenty of other events to keep you busy =)

All election candidates MUST email Laura asap with a list of all events they have participated in during this Key Club year. Existing members should count the year since last March while new members should count since the summer/September. (We will take this into consideration) This information will be used to see how active you have been in the club. Elections will start at tomorrows club meeting, so also make sure you have a 2 minute speech ready and are prepared for 3 minutes of questioning. Good luck to everyone!

Thats all for now, see you all tomorrow =)

Anna Grasza

Hey Key Clubbers!

YAY! Midyears are finally over, which means a few days (however brief) to relax! So only a few quick, but important announcements:

District Convention is rapidly approaching, and we need everyone to start working on those awards! This includes poster, oratorical, directory, and video contest ideas. Committees for the video and scrapbook competitions will start ASAP, so come ready with plenty of inspiration and ideas! For more info on any of the contests (rules, requirements, etc.) check out www.nydkc.org where the awards booklet is posted.

Elections will be held immediately after we return to school, as in the next two meetings (Feb. 2 and Feb. 9). All candidates must have a two minute speech prepared by next Thursday. Please note that there will also be three minutes of questioning. Good luck to all prospective officers!

There is also an event coming up, the Winter Park Festival in Central Park. This is a free event where people can try cross country skiing, snow tubing, snow sculpting and other winter-ish activities. Volunteers are needed at the check-in booth on February 4th and 5th on
99th Street
and 5th ave. If you are interested, please RSVP with your name and homeroom ASAP.

Enjoy the remainder of Regents week. Ill see you all back at school =)

CONVENTION
Elections also mean that the Key Club District Convention is just around the corner, too! This year, the convention will be held from March 24th to the 26th at Kutcher's Country Club in Monticello, NY. We will talk about DCON at the next meeting but it's loads of fun-- workshops, interclubbing, dancing, and lots of other Key Club stuff. Also, anyone who is elected as an officer is required to attend DCON! We encourage people to come this year -- last year was a blast and there weren't enough spots for everyone to come along. IT IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE!!! The cost is roughly 124 dollars and we provide transportation. Come interclub and raise your Key Club spirit! More on this later though.........

What a lengthy email. I think that is about it though. Enjoy the rest of your holiday break everyone! This was a doozy, hence why I wrote it. Have a happy new year eveyrone and I'll see you in 2006!

Hey Key Clubbers!
This is your friendly neighborhood president here. Courtesy of the lovely Gagnon buses, I was one of the few hundred that made their way to school today. It was a good four hours sitting in classrooms doing absolutely nothing at all. Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that, provided that the strike is still on tommorrow, our club WILL NOT be participating in WRAP IT UP at the JCC. I know, I know! I'm heartbroken and disappointed but not discouraged. For those of you who live in the vincinity, Wrap It Up will still be taking place so go spread some holiday cheer. :) Bring a few gifts to wrap & be ready to have a good time. If the transit strike breaks, be ready to check and meet us in the lobby. (:
Also, the Food Fair HAS BEEN POSTPONED to the Thursday AFTER Winter Break. There will be no meeting this week nor next week. :(
Have a happy holiday, everyone. I hope everyone travels safe and perhaps I'll see you at school tomorrow. :D

Hey Key Clubbers!
So I just realized that most of you new members have NEVER received one of my infamous emails. Shock! Horror! Surprise! Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lena and Anna are always refering to my kitchy little catch phrases although I'm sure most of you never understand a word of what they're saying. I'm known for my verbose and conversational emails, the ones you have to play around with before finally decoding an actual message. And after Friday's OUTSTANDING bake sale, I just couldn't resist delving back into my old position's duties....
We had our first bake sale, which typically occurs in the Spring, last Friday. The selection was AMAZING! We had all types of noodles, fried rice, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, donuts, an interesting selection of salmon-colored butter cookies, pies, and more. At one point, we even expanded our bake sale into two tables. The administration was yelling, Audrey (the hall monitor in front of the Cafeteria) was yelling, and students were yelling for more. It was great. I'd like to THANK EVERYONE who brought in food and an even bigger thanks to EVERYONE who sold. Between the arbitrary pricing, fiasco between serving apple pie in cups, finding sporks, napkins, or anything to eat off of.... you guys were great. We raised over $325, you guys!!! That's almost TWICE what we normally make at Food Fair, which, by the way, is THIS THURSDAY. The funds are going to a whole assortment of sources: a small fraction to more food at a meeting, part of it going to our UNICEF initiative, some into the National Alliance for Autism Research, and a little more into the Rofuthba project (a primary school in Sierra Leone, West Africa, which, after a 10 year civil war, is finally rebuilding. More than 200 post-conflict children in five villages attend, or will attend, this school.) THANK YOU GUYS FOR HELPING OUT. I got to interact and meet and greet some amazing members and I can't tell you all how much I love you guys and the club.
I'm literally bursting with pride but that's always what happens when I see members in action. You guys are awesome. (:
So now, here's the deal. We have to do even better at Food Fair (is that even possible?!?!) We won't be having a meeting next week but please bring something to Food Fair or stay and help out afterschool. Refer to Anna's last email for more information but remember, it's THIS THURSDAY! Stay after school to help or to eat, and participate in one of Science's "better" school events. I'm looking forward to it.
Also, if you're coming to MONDAY'S DIVISIONAL at Washington Irving High School (5pm), RSVP ASAP!!!! Again, check out Anna's last email for more info.
That's about it! I love you guys!

Hey Key Clubbers!
For those of you that were physically there at the last meeting, then you already know that we are having a bake sale in school this week. However, there is a major correction in the information given during the meeting. The bake sale will not be this Wednesday, December 14th, but the bake sale IS THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16TH. I'm sorry about this last minute change, but another cultural club snagged the wednesday bake sale spot first. Grrr! but all is good. So here's the skinny:
What: Key Club Bake Sale -money will go towards club funds so that means convention money, food for club meetings, etc.
When: This FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16TH.
How: To participate in this event, BRING FOOD!!! (bake goods, snacks, ETHNIC FOODS, homebaked goods, etc) Ethnic foods always sell really well. Whipped cream with baked goods also sell very well. For every reasonable size dish, you will get one hour of credit. If you are bringing a dish please drop it off at the beginning of 4th period or at the begining of the lunch periods. The Bake Sale will be taking place outside the cafeteria doors (in the hallway). So for those of you that can't make it to outside events, this is a GREAT way to get your hours fulfilled. Remember that you only need 40 hours to get club credit, and trust me that is NOT ALOT at all.
Also, those who help sell during the four lunch periods will also be getting hours towards credit. So for those you who can sell during the lunch periods, please email me personally at [email protected], so I can sign you guys up. Please only use my email for THIS EVENT. In the email, please put your name, official class, and what lunch period you are willing to sell. If you have more than one free lunch period, you are more than welcome to sell during both of them.
That's about it guys. I will remind you guys about the details of the bake sale during thursday's meeting, so in the words of Laura, your president: "Be there, or be Square!"
NOTE: Committee head selections will also be taking place right after the meeting this week. So for those of you who want to sign up for a committee, or would like to be the head of a committee, please come to this week's meeting.
Yours in Caring,
~Lena

Hey Key Clubbers!

Much as I would hate to drag you away from the pleasant weather outside, there are a few important Key Club announcements!

Operation Chicken Soup- This is a project where we help prepare and package food for those in need. It is a great way to meet new people and make a difference, and will be on Tuesday, December 13th from 5:15 to 7pm. This is hosted by the JCC (334 Amsterdam Ave. at 76th St.) You can get there by taking the 1 or 9 to 79th St and walking down 3 blocks, and then over to Amsterdam Ave, although we will be meeting in the school lobby at 4:00 on Tuesday afternoon and traveling there together. Please be prompt! Also, you MUST RSVP if you plan on attending. Hope to see you all there!

Divisional: Our next divisional will be on Monday, December 19th at Washington Irving High School at 5:00. The school is located on
E 16th Street
and Irving Plaza. You can take the 4 train to
14th St.
-
Union Square
and walk east one block from
Union Square
and north to
16th Street
. The school is on the right. We will be meeting in the school lobby at 3:45 and traveling there together as a group. (Be prompt!) For anyone thinking of running for Lt. Governor, you MUST attend this divisional.

*Also, Washington Irving HS is hosting a
Coat Drive
. If you have any lightly used coats that you would like to donate, either bring them with you to divisional or give them to one of the officers beforehand if you cannot attend.

Wrap it Up- This is an event at the JCC where we will be gift wrapping donated presents and making holiday cards for children in need. It is a really fun event- (think teens from all over NYC and Kosher pizza) It will be taking place on Wednesday, December 21 from 5:30 to 9:00 at the JCC. (address and directions provided above) We encourage you to bring a new donated gift for an infant, kid or teen to wrap, such as a board game, doll, action figure, etc. Hope to see you all there!

Holiday Cards for Seniors- Much like the cards we made for Thanksgiving, we will be creating cards to brighten the holiday season for homebound Senior Citizens. This is SUCH an easy way to earn credit, especially for those who have issues with coming to events outside of school, since you can make the cards at home. Plus, its fun and really does make a difference (which remember, is the goal of Key Club) We ask that you make 3 cards in order to receive credit for the project. However, I am personally asking you to double, even triple that number, since I know you are all so amazing and proficient at card-making. (I looked through all of the Thanksgiving Cards) Now, heres the REALLY important part- the rules. Please follow the rules, or your cards will probably not end up being given to seniors, therefore making the whole project useless.

- Cards must be 4x6 when folded up (Use a ruler guys!)

- Do not include any glitter, glue, or attachments that could fall off easily

- These are HOLIDAY cards- show general seasonal themes (ie. snowmen, snowflakes, trees, doves of peace, winter scenes, candy canes, gingerbread men/houses, wreaths.)

- Do not include anything that suggests a particular holiday/religious celebration (ie. NO Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, Menorahs.)

- Cards should say Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year (Nothing too cheery or that has anything to do with friends, family, health, etc.- Remember that these are homebound Seniors)

- Do not sign your name- Include a post it note with your name, homeroom and the # of cards you made

I know that all seems really demanding, but those are the rules of the Organization, and most of them are pretty obvious/self explanatory. Please bring the cards to the next meeting (Thursday December15th), or give them to someone that will be at the next meeting. I really hope that you all participate in this project, and a week is a lot of time to make cardslets get working!

Food Fair- Each year our school hosts a fair where all of the clubs sell food to raise money for their various causes/needs. It is probably one of the most fun school events of the year and will take place in the cafeteria after 9th period on Thursday, December 22. As the largest club in the school, we expect to have tons of food. We will grant about 1 hour of credit for each reasonable dish (ie. dont bring one cupcake and expect credit) Ethnic and homemade food sells best, so we encourage you to rice, noodles, etc. as well as cakes, cookies and pies. Make sure to label each dish with your name, homeroom and the club name (KEY CLUB). Also mark if the food with room temperature, refrigerate or heat. You will be able to drop it off the morning of the food fair in the back of the cafeteria. (There will be swarms of people there) Once again, this is any EASY way to earn credit, so put on those aprons

Distinguished Key Clubber- This is an award given out at District Convention each year. The application is relatively simple and many of our Clubbers qualify without even knowing it. You can view the application on www.nydkc.org under the Awards tab. It is a great distinction to have, so we encourage you all to apply!

Pictures- If anyone has taken pictures at any of our events, I would really love it if you could send them to me. Pics are really useful for the Key-Wee (which does exist, by the way) and for the scrapbook which we will hopefully get started on soon. Plus, you can submit pictures to the district website (www.nydkc.org) or to the international website (www.keyclub.org) and make our club look uber-cool.

Sorry guys! I know this email has been a workout for those reading comprehension skills, but Im sure youll thank me once SATs roll around Avoid wet snow puddles and enjoy the weekend!

Yours in Caring,

Anna Grasza

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend! Just a few Key Club related announcements:

-Divisional: Our next divisional will be on Monday, December 19th at Washington Irving High School at 5:00. The school is located on
E 16th Street
and Irving Plaza. You can take the 4 train to
14th St.
-
Union Square
and walk east one block from
Union Square
and north to
16th Street
. The school is on the right. We will be meeting in the school lobby at 3:45 and traveling there together as a group. (Be prompt!) For anyone thinking of running for Lt. Governor, you MUST attend this divisional.

*Also, Washington Irving HS is hosting a
Coat Drive
. If you have any lightly used coats that you would like to donate, either bring them with you to divisional or give them to one of the officers if you cannot attend.

-Wrap it Up: This is an event at the JCC where we will be gift wrapping donated presents and making holiday cards for children in need. It is a really fun event- (think teens from all over NYC and Kosher pizza) It will be taking place on Wednesday, December 21 from 5:30 to 9:00 at the JCC, located at 334 Amsterdam Ave. at 76th St. You can take the 1 or 9 to 79th St and walk down 3 blocks, and then over to Amsterdam Ave. We encourage you to bring a new donated gift for an infant, kid or teen to wrap, such as a board game, doll, action figure, etc. Hope to see you all there!

-Operation Chicken Soup: This is a project where we help prepare and package food for those in need. It is a great way to meet new people and make a difference, and takes place each Tuesday, lasting from 5:15 to 7. The next date for this month is Dec. 13. This is also hosted by the JCC. (See directions above-its the same place) Space is limited though, so you need to RSVP if you plan on attending.

Thats it for nowHave fun and be happy =)

Hey Key Clubbers!
I know, I know, I know ... Where is the Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen this year?? What are the details?? Well, due to popular demand, here they are (sorry they're so late! - contact difficulties):
What: Thanksgiving Day Soup Kitchen
When: Thursday, November 24th, 2005 - Thanksgiving Day!!
There will be three shifts at the soup kitchen, 1) From 10-12PM [Preparation], 2) From 12-2PM [Serving], and 3) From 2-4PM [Clean-up]. You may only sign up for one shift and there will only be 10 spots per shift. I will be the officer there at the first shift, Anna will be at the second, and Elias or Angela will be at the third shift.
Where: The Parish of Calvary/St. George's Episcopal Church
209 East 16th Street
How to get there: Take the L, N, R, Q, W, 4, 5, 6 to 14th Street, then walk up to 16th Street, and walk east to just past 3rd Avenue. Please use the map below for walking directions, the red star represents the Church!
However, if you are not able to view the map, please click on the link below:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=209%20E%2016th%20St&city=New%20York&state=NY&zipcode=10003&country=US&title=%3cb%3eSt%20George%27s%20Episcopal%20Church%3a%3c%2fb%3e%20212%2d475%2d0830%3cbr%20%2f%3e209%20E%2016th%20St%20New%20York%2c%20NY%2010003%2c%20US&cid=lfmaplink2
Once again, there will be three shifts for the Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen this year. There will be only 10 spots per shift, and you can only sign up for one shift!! To sign up for shifts, please email the club at [email protected] before Wednesday(tomorrow) 12PM. In the email, include your name, email address, official class, and which shift you prefer (also specify a 2nd choice just in case your first is full). Also, please check your emails Thursday morning before you leave the house to see which shift you will be there for. St. George's already has many outside volunteers, so our club is only allowed to have 10 people at each shift. Sorry guys - if they have any more volunteers, the event will be an occupational hazard!
Attendence will be taken by the club officer present at each shift, so please check in with the officer there once you arrive.
Don't worry guys, if you can't attend this event, or can't get a spot, there will be many more events for the upcoming holiday season - Holiday cards, holiday soup kitchens, Wrap it up, etc. So make sure you are up to date!
Happy Thanksgiving You Guys! Eat Lots of Turkey and Apple Pie (Pumpkin Pie =]) for me! And have a great 4-day weekend!
Yours in Caring and Service,
~Lena =)

Hey Key Clubbers,

As if you didnt already know, we did NOT have a meeting this past Thursday. (November 10) Sorry guys! Inane rapid dismissal, you know how it goes

Just reminding you that we will be meeting next Thursday (November 17th) and we will be collecting UNICEF boxes! Remember that there is a $10 minimum to get credit for the project, but if you raised less, turn that in as well. Every little bit counts =)

Please remember to bring your senior cards to the next meeting as well. In case you forgot, the cards are for Thanksgiving and will be delivered to homebound seniors. Make the cards no larger than 4x6 inches and include images of turkeys, leaves, cornucopias, etc. Include a kind message such as Thinking of You on Thanksgiving. (You need not be an artist- just try to be creative!) DO NOT include excessively cheery messages or images that reference health or family or include your name. Please attach a post it note with your name, homeroom and the number of cards you made. We ask that you make at least 2 cards, but more are certainly appreciated. This is SUCH an easy way to earn a lot of credit, and you are cheering up the holidays for otherwise lonely seniors. I REALLY hope that you all participate in this project. =)

Ok, thats all for now. Enjoy the rest of the glorious three-day weekend!!!

Hey Key Clubbers!

Just a few quick reminders for the upcoming week:

THIS Monday, November 7th is the Key Club Divisional at Washington Irving High School. (

40 IRVING PLACE NEW YORK, NY 10003
) We will be meeting after 9th period in the school lobby and traveling there together. (The divisional starts at 6pm and will last 1 to1.5 hours.) Basically, a divisional is like one of our club meetings, except that it is led by the Lieutenant Governor for our division and you get to meet Key Clubbers from high schools all over Bronx and Manhattan. It is definitely a great way to meet new people and it is a requirement for the Distinguished Key Clubber award. Plus, the food is always yummy! Hope to see you all there =)

Monday (November 7th) is also Show Your K Day, which is the first day of Key Club Week. (I know, we are SO important we get an entire week devoted to us!) Key Clubbers are encouraged to don their Key Club pins, t-shirts from convention or projects and even our symbolic blue and gold colors. It is a great way to show off your Key Club pride and raise awareness about the organization. PLEASE make your editor happy and participate in this publicity-friendly event =)

UNICEF boxes will be collected next Thursday, November 10th at the club meeting. Make sure to put your name and homeroom on the box. There is a $10 minimum to get credit for the project.

We are also going to be making Thanksgiving Cards for homebound seniors. The cards should be no larger than 4x6 inches and should not contain any glitter, feathers, or other attachments that could fall off easily. You can make computer generated cards, but hand-made ones seem to have the most meaning. For ideas on content, you could write something like Thinking of You on Thanksgiving and include images such as turkeys, pilgrims/native Americans, dried leaves, cornucopias, gourds, etc Please DO NOT: use images of families eating together, write messages that are excessively cheery or reference health, sign your name, or include envelopes. These are the rules of the organization that we are donating the cards to, so please respect them =) We ask that you make at least 2 cards, but more would be certainly be appreciated. (Please attach a post-it note with your name, the number of cards you made and your homeroom) The cards will be collected on November 17th during the club meeting. This is a great way to earn credit and also bring cheer to the life a homebound senior. You dont even need to be an artist!

For those who attended Thursdays meeting, I hope that you got a chance to look at the Key Wee, our club newsletter. (sorryI know there werent enough copies for everyone) If anyone is interested in writing a piece for the newsletter, it would make me deliriously happy. Feel free to submit articles/pictures/anything else you want about Key Club events. Credit/ my eternal love will be granted!

OK, thats about it for now. Enjoy your weekend!

Hey Key Clubbers!

We have a TON of new announcements, so Ill try to be concise.

Fist of all, PAY YOUR DUES! Find an officer during the week or at the latest, bring your $13 to the next meeting. You can find any of the officers in the hallways. Specifically, you can find your president Laura in 013 or the Holocaust museum during period 3, or check the library throughout the day because pretty much all of the officers hang out there. (I know- we are such nerds!)

After you pay your dues, make sure to pick up a UNICEF box. (All of the officers have extras to give out) Each box is numbered and ALL boxes must be returned. Basically, you should jingle your box around school, annoy your friends or actually go trick or treating. (I dressed up last year and actually went door to door with my friends- much fun!) There is a $10 minimum donation to get credit, and it is overall a really easy project to do. Plus, you have plenty of time because we will collect money in mid November. All the money goes to the new Kicking AIDS out of Kenya initiative, and more info is on the boxes. Have fun with it!

Anyone with late donations for the Breast Cancer Walk should hand them in ASAP. Remember, there is a $10 minimum donation to get credit for doing the walk.

THIS Sunday, October 23 is the Alzheimers Memory Walk. I know that it is really short notice, but the walk will be in Riverside Park on WEST 83rd Street and Riverside Drive and will only last 1 to 3 miles. Check in, on site registration and breakfast will be from 9 to 10am. Opening ceremonies and awards will be from 10 to 11am and the walk will begin at 11am. You can register on location and there is a $10 minimum donation to get credit. However, you will get special credit that will count for more for doing this walk because of the circumstances. Email the club account ASAP to let her know you are coming.

Key to Your Future day is going to be on Saturday, October 29 at Ernst & Young, 5 Times Square New York, on the 23rd floor. 42nd street and 7th Avenue from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Lunch will be provided. Basically, the event will consist of workshops given by the Kiwanis Club of NYC Young Professionals about college admissions and different kinds of careers. You must RSVP with your name, homeroom and the three workshops of your choice by Sunday night because space is limited. Please dress business-casual for the event. (ie- NO jeans, t-shirts or sneakers) Also, you must bring your school id or other photo id with you or you will not be admitted into the building. The workshop selections are : Financing Your Education, How to Write a Winning College Application Essay, Employment in Accounting and Finance, Employment in the Arts and Media, Key Club Leadership Opportunities and Life Outside Your Club, College & Employment Interviewing or Rsum Writing

On Saturday, October 29th, we will be helping out with window painting on Johnson Avenue in the Bronx. (If it rains, the window painting will be moved to Sunday, October 30th.) Basically, we will monitor the children while they paint. We will meet at 8:30 for breakfast at the Blue Bay Restaurant on 3533 Johnson Avenue and then walk to the painting site. The entire event should only take 2 to 3 hours. RSVP with your name and homeroom immediately if you will be attending.

After our next meeting, committees will start forming. Committees include Current Projects Committee (UNICEF), Public Relations, Recycling, and Fundraising. Committees work on specific causes and you do get credit for being on one, or more.

On a more general note, when rsvp-ing for any event or just emailing the club account with a question, make sure to include the event you are going to attend/ asking about and your homeroom. It just makes my life a little bit easier =)

Ok guys, that about covers itHope to see you all at our upcoming events!

Hey Key Clubbers!

Sad as we all are that there was no meeting this week, we have TWO events this weekend! Heres all the info you need:

On Saturday, October 15 we will partake in Its My Park Day at Flushing Meadows Corona Park . The event will last from 10am to 2pm and we will be planting, sweeping, and raking. It'll be held at Passerelle Plaza . Take the 7 train to Shea Stadium and walk down the ramp to get into the park, which will lead you directly into the Plaza. In addition, refreshments will be provided (coffee and cake). The first 80 people to show up to the event (in total- not just in Key Club) get a FREE t-shirt! The event will take place rain or shine, and if you get lost, you can call Laura at (917) 363-6251.

On Sunday, October 16 we will do the Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk. Meet our club from 8:45 to 9:15am on East 72nd Street and 5th Avenue . It's right next to the park but, as crowded as it might be, you'll find us. Just look for the big BRONX SCIENCE KEY CLUB sign and the large group of people. Be sure to bring your REGISTRATION AND PLEDGE forms, with team Bronx Science Key Club written on it. We will register and hand in money as a group but you also need to sign in with a club officer so we know you attended. There is a $10 minimum that you need to raise in order to get credit for doing the walk. PLEASE- no change! Checks, money orders, or bills are fine, but no coins. You can take the 6 to 68th St ( Hunter College ) or 77th St and then walk to the park. If you get lost, you can call Laura at 917-363-6251 or me at (917) 626-4914. Wear comfy shoes and dress for the weather. See you there rain or shine!

Also, don't forget to pay your dues! You can pay dues to any of the officers throughout the week. Just make sure to fill out the member information sheet when paying dues or we wont know that you paid. The deadline is October 20th, which will be our next meeting. Keep in mind, youre not really a member until you have paid your dues!

Club Photos for the yearbook will on Wednesday, October 19th at 10:05 (during 3rd period). You can ask any of the officers for a pass to get out of class so that you can be in the picture.

Our next meeting will be October 20th and we will be handing out UNICEF boxes! In our president Lauras words, BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!

Hey Key Clubbers!

For those of you who are new to Key Club, and to those that are not, WELCOME! Im Anna Grasza, your editor and therefore sender of the emails. All of the officers are very excited about this year and hope that we can make it the most productive one yet! We are especially happy that you have chosen to continue or start your service with Key Club.

Although we discussed it at the meeting, here are the requirements for Key Club:

-Attend 2/3 of all meetings

-Complete at least 40 hours of service

-Pay dues!

-Buy an S.O. Card

For anyone nervous about the hours requirement, its REALLY easy to meet. You will not have to sign away your life to Key Club or come to every single event. Your service throughout the year does add up.

Of course, there is also the matter of dues. We ask you to pay $13, which breaks down into:

$$6.50 to Key Club International (pays for things like Key Noter, membership cards,   conventions...)

$5.00 to the district (for district convention, projects, newsletters...)

$1.50 to our club

Please pay your dues ASAP because the deadline is October 20th

And now, onto the service

Next week, the school will be holding a food/school supplies drive for Hurricane Katrina victims. Anyone interested in helping with the Katrina relief effort, meet on September 29 (Thursday) in front of room 107S after school to pack/sort donated goods. Anyone who would like to staff the collection tables during the week should go to 017S during their free period.

THIS Thursday, September 29th is the first Divisional, which will be held in room 334 from 4:30 to 6:00. A divisional is a meeting held by the Lieutenant Governor where all of the clubs in our district to hear important Key Club news. District and governors projects are usually discussed, as well as various events going on within our divisional clubs. This is a great way to learn more about Key Club, meet other Key Clubbers and fulfill a requirement for the Distinguished Key Clubber Award (which everyone should be striving for). In addition refreshments are served, including PIZZA! Please reply ASAP to the club account to let us know if you are coming.

On October 16 we will participate in Making Strides against Breast Cancer in the 72 St Bandshell in Central Park . Making Strides is a noncompetitive walk supporting the American Cancer Societys unique mission to fight cancer on four fronts: research, education, advocacy, and patient services. If you want to participate, register online with our team, Bronx Science Key Club, at   http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=104728. You can then print out your sponsor form. Remember, you must raise a minimum of $10 to get credit!

Saturday, October 15th is Its My Park Day in Flushing Meadows Corona Park . We will be raking, painting, etc. Refreshments will be served! Please RSVP if you are coming.

On October 30th, we will be helping out with window painting on Johnson Avenue in the Bronx . Basically, we will monitor the children while they paint. RSVP very soon if you will be attending.

Reminder! This Thursday is Club Fair and the divisional afterwards, so we will NOT be having a meeting. The next meeting will be on October 6th

Ok, I am SOOO sorry for the extensive email, but we are just SO busy. I hope to see many of you at our upcoming events!

thursday, september 15

Hey Key Clubbers!

I hope you all had a great summer and haven't forgotten Key Club or your Editor, Anna (me). With any luck, you haven't had to deal with too many program conflicts since our glorious return to school. More than anything else though, I hope you are all ready for service, as our club has a lot going on!

First and foremost, our first event will be THIS Saturday, September 17. We will be volunteering for the 3rd Annual Starbucks Make Your Mark Event at Passerelle Plaza, in Flushing Meadows Corona Park from 10 AM to 2 PM. You can take the 7 train to Shea Stadium and walk down the ramp into the park. Volunteers will meet at the plaza and refreshments will be served! RSVP ASAP to the account so Laura can register you. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours, especially because you (hopefully) aren't bogged down with too much school work yet. Plus, who could say no to STARBUCKS?

Secondly, our first meeting will be on (drumroll) Thursday, SEPTEMBER 22 in room 334. We have alot to discuss, so hopefully you will all attend. Remember, new members are always welcome, so feel free to bring a friend. (or two...or three....)

Also, on the same day (September 22) we will hold a bake sale during periods 4-7 to raise money for a Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. We will send you more info regarding food and volunteers, but keep it in mind.

As with the start of every school year, there comes the time for paying club dues. It may be painful, but it makes your treasurer, Elias very happy. So, dues this year will be $13. That is a tad pricey, but the money is divided up among several sources:

$6.50 goes to Key Club International (pays for things like Key Noter, membership cards, conventions...)

$5.00 goes to the district (for district convention, projects, newsletters...)

$1.50 goes to our club (for food, fundraisers...)

Please pay your dues as soon as possible! If you really want to join Key Club but have a problem with paying dues, speak with one of the officers in private. We can certainly work something out. =)

OK, that was a somewhat long post, but there was a lot to say. Besides, just think how those reading comprehension skills of yours are improving! I hope to see you all on Saturday and at our first meeting!

Yours in Caring,
Anna Grasza

Hey Key Clubbers!

Well, school is just around the corner and you know what that means-- another year of service is here too! I hope you're all uber-excited; the boardies and I have got oodles and oodles of service projects for the fall season from window-painting in the Bronx, to Manhattan/Queens park clean-ups, to raising money through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, and our classic Breast Cancer Walk. Several of these projects are held BEFORE the school's annual club fair-- even before our pre-meeting, which we will give you notice of very soon-- but we hope you'll continue your service and come anyway. Get a head start at earning credit! C'mon.. you know you want to. =)

And I don't know if you noticed but... our website is up and running AND with a new layout! It's something of a simple layout, works well on IE and AOL with 1024x768 resolution, but it looks kind of bad on Mozilla and smaller resolutions. Apologies for that but at least this text is readable. But guys...! WE HAVE A WORKING WEBSITE! (dances.)

My enthusiasm for the new Key Club year is maybe just a little over the top. But what can I say? I Key Club: we're a club made up of the most dedicated and most awesome people ever, who take time out of their busy lives to do things that benefit other people. We change the world through our service initatives, one hour at a time...

I am assuming that if you're reading this site, then you are or were a part of Key Club. That is why I invite you back to join this year, to continue your "caring" and complete our Key Club community. I also invite you to bring a friend-- or two, or three, or why not all of your friends-- to our pre-meetings! Join Key Club, the largest club in Bronx Science and the largest high school service program in the world! You won't regret it.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all! TO HUMMUS, PITA BREAD, AND COLD GRAPES! (one of these days, I'll bring lots of food to the meeting.)

Yours in Caring and Service,

Laura Chin
