I couldn't decide on the mark to give Jaws at first - should I give it 8.5 or go for a 9. It didn't take me long to decide however and by not long I mean about ten seconds and by "decide" I mean there was really never any doubt that Jaws deserved to be a 9 because it is one of the best films ever. I will take this moment to reply to the message on the message board from Mr Paul Burns which, coming during a review as it does is an honour that he will probably have trouble coming to terms with. He told me to remember that "Jaws is without doubt the best film ever made," and to many people it probably is, it would definitely come in my top ten films of all time and any top ten films list that Neil "The Crap-tin" Bates would write if only his fingers weren't too fat to press the keys. Burns also said that "It is an exercise in suspense, and shock with one truely horrific moment!" Again this statement is completely true and what makes Jaws so damn good. To fully appreciate this fact I think that you need to watch it for the first time before you reach the age of ten because this is when you truely shit youself but I think we can all feel the sense of foreboding when "THOSE IDIOT PEOPLE KEEP GOING IN THE WATER WHEN THEY KNOW THAT THERE IS A KILLER SHARK IN THERE." I wouldn't even go in the sea at Blackpool nevermind go swimming at a shark infested beach, although my reasons for not swimming at Blackpool are for the very different, poo-poo in the mouth if you open it reason. The suspense has a lot to do with the music by John Williams who never fails to deliver. (The score won an Oscar) It makes the early shark scenes all the more edgy and although there are so many moments to choose from, the very first shots when Jaws is swimming through the weeds is one of my favourites because even though you have seen it loads of times you still say "ooohhh watch it or else you'll get eaten." I do anyway. It sets the mood just right for a frenzied shark attack. It is also built up by hardly seeing the shark, in fact not at all in the first half of the film. Just knowing that it is there and knowing that its presence hangs all over the darn place. Shock is also dished out in sizeable amounts with plenty of blood and severed limbs and spooky heads popping out out boat hulls. Now if I were to make a guess at the moment that Mr Burns described as "truly horrific" this scary green head would be my second guess, my first guess would be the bit where Quint gets eaten and all blood comes out of his mouth. Please can you confirm this PB. Another point that Burnsy made was that the critic in The Times who is obviously a complete ass muncher said that the shark was "implausible." You can't train sharks to act, cock master so I think they did a good job with their crap 70's technology. It looked real enough when I was a kid which is when it counts, but I can remember the time when I first realised when watching Jaws 2 that "it looks well fake" - this was a definitive moment in my life. The film is far better than the book as well. I had heard that the book was far more gruesome but this was obviously a complete lie. It is an interesting read though if only to compare it to the film, to see the extra bits and to see how much better Spielberg's changes make the story. I won't say what the differences are so I don't spoil it for anyone. So. I think I have argued a fairly decent case for Jaws being one of the greatest films ever so I will leave it at that.
