US Hospital #1
Chattanooga Tenn
March 1st 1865
Friend George,
It is some time since I left home and I believe I have not written to you yet, and the reason is because I have no stamps. In fact I have none now, but I am going to write a few lines anyway. You must excuse me for not stamping the letter.
I am well, that is, about well. I am not very strong yet, but I think plenty of grub and work will fetch the strength, and flesh too. The doctor marked me for Convalescent camp this morning and I went to him afterwards and told him I did not want to go there. I wanted to go to my regiment. He asked me where my regiment was, and I told him. He told me to stay here until he could make arrangements to send me to the regiment. I hope it will not take him long, for I want to get back to the boys, it would seem like getting home.
This is the first day of March and it has commenced the month here in Chattanooga with raining. I don't like to see rain down here -- it is apt to make mud. I suppose you are having pretty cold weather yet. Not so here. It has been such nice dry warm weather it would make farmers think about plowing.
How is Allen and what is he doing nowadays? When you write, tell me if you get letters from the boys, and, if you do, tell me how they are getting along. I have not heard a word from them since I was at home, and I would like to hear from them. I hope I will be with them before long, and if I do get there, I will not leave them again. Not if I can help it.
Excuse my writing, for this pen is sharper than a needle and sticks in the paper like blazes. George, we are having good news from Bully Sherman, are we not? I think he is just about the boy that knows how to come Oround the Johnnies and I guess they have found it out before this time. At least they acknowledge to have found him superior. There is no news that I know of that would be new to you more than to tell you that this place is not run away and is still here. No more at this time. Write soon and direct your letter to hospital No 1, Chattanooga, Tenn. Give my love to Sarah and Mary and all of the folks. Accept this from me. Write soon.
