For The

78th New York Volunteer Infantry

About ten years ago, I discovered three ancestors who fought in the Civil War; one was a cousin and two were uncles. These three enlisted in the 78th New York Volunteer Infantry Co. E, out of Buffalo, New York, around the same time. Several others who would marry sisters, cousins or nieces of these three also joined the 78th NY Co. E about the same time. These men have become the reason why I re-enact and my motivation behind my dedication to the Civil War and the hobby.

I have spent the past ten years compiling information about the 78th NYVI and those ancestors who fought in Co. E. One of the reasons I wanted to put this web page together was to bring the story of the 78th out in the open. The 78th NYVI was no outstanding regiment, but merely an average regiment of the time. It was not made famous because of its deeds on the field of battle, but their deeds of courage and faith are no less important or less courageous than those regiments that are well known today.

I put their story here for those who had ancestors who fought for the 78th NYVI, who would like to know more about the regiment, and to bring their story forward after having been lost in the dust and mildew of time. This story is far from complete. The content here is more of an overview of the regimental history. Although I have gained a lot of information through hours of grueling, mind numbing research, I have only begun to scratch the surface.

I hope the content of this history is informational and educational for those who are interested, enjoy and learn.
