Reasons to Hope, Reasons to Live - Prologue

By HanaHeart

During the silent night at Helm's deep, a fair sounding horn was sounded outside the gates.

Legolas turned his head, whispering, "That is no Orc horn!" He and Aragorn rushed outside to see the newcomers.

A soldier from the tower above shouted, "Send for the king. Open the gates!"

The large gates opened, allowing an army of elves to march in. Legolas' heart skipped a beat when he saw Haldir leading the army.

King Théoden exclaimed in disbelief when he saw the elven warriors standing in front of him. "How is this possible?"

"I bring word from Elrond of Rivendell," Haldir said proudly. "An alliance once existed between Elves and Men. Long ago, we fought and died together. We come to honour that allegiance."

Aragorn took his friend into a tight embrace, smiling with joy. ~Mae govannen, Haldir!~ [Welcome, Haldir] "You are most welcome!"

Haldir smiled, and looked at the blond elf who stood right behind Aragorn. After Aragorn had released him, he walked towards Legolas and embraced him tightly.

~I've missed you,~ he whispered so softly that only Legolas' ear could hear what he had said. Legolas smiled warmly at Haldir.

The two broke up from the embrace reluctantly. With his hand still around Legolas' slender waist, Haldir addressed King Théoden, "We are proud to fight alongside men, once more."

The King nodded and everyone walked inside the castle. No one noticed the pain that was shown in the eyes of the future King of Gondor.

Legolas gazed at room for the hundredth time that day, making sure that everything was prepared for a special night with his lover. He smiled and thanked the Valar for they had reunited him once again to be with his lover. Only the Valar knew how much he missed him, how much he needed him, needed his support and his loving words and gentle touches.

Legolas sighed, there was a battle ahead of them and no one knows how it will end... who will end up killed or captured.

Shaking of all the dark thoughts from his head, Legolas reminded himself of the present. His lover is here with him, offering his love and support. He will not ruin the pleasant night which he has been looking forward too with disturbing thoughts of a hidden future. Tonight the whole world will vanish, and no one will exist in his eyes except for him and Haldir.

A light knock on the wooden door snapped Legolas from his thoughts. Opening the door, he smiled at the sight of his lover leaning against the doorframe.

"Have you lost your way to your chambers, my lord?" he asked teasingly.

Haldir chuckled and leaned further in front, pressing his body against Legolas'. "No, I think I'm in the right place."

Legolas laughed and backed away, making way for the other elf to enter the room. Haldir studied the room for a moment, and then his eyes landed on a nearby table with two chairs facing each other.

"I see that you have prepared everything, my love," he said as he sat on one of the chairs.

"Yes," Legolas smiled proudly. "I know that you must be hungry after such a long and tiring trip from Lothlórien to here, so I took the liberty to prepare you a small feast." He removed the cloth that was covering the table, revealing food and wine underneath it. ~A feast just for you and me,~ he whispered seductively in elvish.

"I am indeed hungry." Haldir stood up from his place and took the elven prince in his arms. "But not for this type of food."

"Then, might I ask, what kind of food do you desire my lord?" Legolas began to feel slightly dizzy under Haldir's steel gaze.

"Legolas, stop calling me my lord, I'm not a lord, not to you at least."

"But I like to call you that," Legolas whispered, blushing slightly, "you are the lord of my heart, my love."

"Really?" Haldir smiled, "then you are the prince of my heart, my little prince."

Legolas laughed softly. "You haven't told me, what do you desire yet, my lord?"

"I desire for a cherry-red lip," Haldir whispered against Legolas' lips. "Soft ivory skin," he trailed butterfly kisses all over the crevice Legolas' neck. "And sun-kissed blond hair," he stroked Legolas' hair tenderly, letting the silky hair fall against his skin appreciatively.

Legolas moaned as Haldir continued to explore his neck. "And where will I find all these things, my lord?"

"They are all in the youngest prince of Mirkwood, my love."

Legolas pulled away, and looked at Haldir with pretence shock. "Why, Haldir, but that's me!"

"Exactly my point," Haldir smiled mischievously and scooped up Legolas' body.

"Haldir," Legolas exclaimed in surprise. "Put me down!" Haldir chuckled and walked towards the bed. "Haldir, I mean it, put me down!" Legolas struggled to get free but Haldir was stronger than he was, so all his attempts were put to vain.

"Your wish is my command, my prince," Haldir dropped Legolas on the bed, "there you are."

Realizing where Haldir had dropped him, Legolas felt his cheeks growing hotter. He tried to stand up, just to be pushed again by Haldir's body.

"Haldir, you sneaky little perv-hummmm." The rest of Legolas' sentence was cut of halfway when Haldir's lips met his in another passionate kiss.

"Princes don't say such words, my love," Haldir whispered into his mouth.

"And marchwardens don't take princes by surprise," Legolas whispered back.

"When beautiful princes offer to prepare food for marchwardens, they should consider themselves part of the feast as well."

"Well, when brave marchwardens want princes as their feast, princes can't deny them that."

Haldir pulled away and looked at the beauty beneath him. "You are so beautiful, my prince."

Legolas smiled and caressed Haldir's lips with his thumb. ~Amin mela lle.~ [I love you.]

Haldir smiled and pressed his lips against Legolas', enjoying the sweet taste of the prince's lips. But they did not know that this would also be their last time together.

Legolas surveyed the battlefield with weary eyes.

The battle had lasted throughout the entire night and a little part of the morning. The orc army was powerful and if Gandalf hadn't arrived with the riders of Rohan, they might have won. Many elves and men who had tried to prevent the march of the orc army from reaching the large gates had been killed.

Legolas sighed and shook all the memories of the battle from his mind. They had defeated the dark army and Rohan is safe for now.

He looked back at the fort, searching for his friends. He saw Gimli sitting under the wall, sharpening his axe, Gandalf talking to King Théoden and Éomer, elven and human soldiers tending to their wounds with the help of the women and children of Rohan. Aragorn was sitting on the steps to the city, staring at him sadly. Legolas looked away from Isildur's heir and searched for his lover. Surprisingly, the proud Marchwarden of Lothlórien was nowhere to be seen. Legolas frowned and looked around again but he could not spot his lover. He looked back at Aragorn and walked towards him.

"Aragorn, have you seen Haldir?" he asked when he was near enough.

Aragorn didn't answer him, instead he tore his eyes from the elf he secretly loved, and gazed behind him, towards the battlefield. Legolas followed Aragorn's eyes with his and was shocked to see a red velvet cloak lying on the ground.

"No," Legolas whispered.

"He died in my arms, Legolas," Aragorn said softly. "He told me to tell you that he loves you and he always will."

"No," Legolas repeated, louder this time. Not paying attention to what Aragorn was saying, "NO!" He shouted in despair.

He ran towards his lover's dead body and kneeled beside it.

"Haldir," he called his lover, tears were falling freely down his cheeks. "Please answer me... Haldir, please!" he begged.

"Legolas," Aragorn placed a comforting hand on the elf's shoulder, "Haldir is gone."

It really hurt him to see the one he loved crying in pain. It even hurt him more than seeing Legolas in the arms of another.

"NO... HALDIR, ANSWER ME!!!" Legolas cried, not caring that everyone in Helm's Deep was watching him. He shook the dead body violently. Hoping that it would bring life back to his lover. Aragorn tried to hug the grieving elf, but Legolas shoved him away roughly and hugged Haldir's corpse, sobbing bitterly.

~Haldir, Meleth nîn.~ [Haldir, My love.]
