The reason for the benefit is simple we need to raise public awareness to the dreadful disease known as lupus. All monies raised will be donated for lupus research, education and financial assistance for individuals living with lupus who cannot afford treatment. Howie D. started this non-profit organization shortly after his sister, Caroline, succumbed to the disease in 1998. Howie's wish is to have one less family go through what he and his family and other families have gone through. Funding for this disease is not as prominet as AIDS , cancer or heart disease. In fact I was informed, by a leading Canadian corporation, that if lupus was as well prominent as breast cancer, they would help The Dorough Lupus Foundation and any affiliated fundraiser with no questions asked. We owe it to lupus suffers and their families to make this disease as well known as breast cancer or AIDS. The numbers are quite staggering when you think about it 1 out of every 186 Americans are affected by! lupus. Those statisitics are very outdated and there is no current numbers from the Canadian or American Lupus Associations. In fact the World Health Organization at the United Nations have no current statistics and we can only estimate how many people are suffering with this disease in third world countries.
Hopefully this fundraiser will bring to light the plight many men, women and children suffer on a daily basis and will help alleviate not only the financial suffering these family members have to endure, but also the physical and emotional strain. Here are a few facts about lupus:
It is a chronic autoimmune disease, which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes anti-bodies directed against "self". Lupus is NOT infectious, rare or cancerous.
LFA market research data show that between 1,400,000 and 2,000,000 people have been diagnosed with lupus. (Study conducted by Bruskin/Goldring Research, 1994). Lupus is more prevalent than AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis combined.
Although the cause of lupus is unknown, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to lupus, and know that environmental factors such as infection, antibodies, ultaviolet light, extreme stress and certain drugs play a critical role in triggering lupus.
Lupus affects 1 out of every 186 Americans. Although lupus can occur at any age, and in either sex 90% of people with lupus are women and during the child bearing years strike women 10 - 15 times more frequently than men. Lupus is more prevalent African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Asians. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms caone and go and mimic other illnesses. Although lupus ranges from mild to life threatening and thousands of Americans die with lupus each year, the majority of cases can be controlled with proper treatment.
Increased professional awareness and improved diagnostic techniques and evaluation methods are contributing to the early diagnosis and treatment of lupus. With current methods of therapy, 80-90% of people with lupus can look forward to a normal lifespan.
While medical science has not yet developed a method for curing lupus, new research brings unexpected findings and increased hope each year. Please join us for this fun filled event. Not only will you have an enjoyable afternoon viewing some sumptous clothing by a few of our fabulous Canadian design houses and enjoying fine Canadian wine and food. But you will also go away in the knowledge that you have contributed to a worth-while cause that deserves the same attention as the other predominent disease we are helping to eradicate.
