TV Hits Interviews

One of the best bits of Wednesday was our visit to a hair salon - not for us you understand, but for the lovely BSB! AJ had warned us last night that he was going to be doing something a bit radical today, but you should have seen our faces when the hairdresser workding on him got our a great big bowl of bright blue dye. Yikes! "I thought I'd go the whole hog for our round the world promotional tour" he explains. "I'll dye it straight back when I get to NY on Tuesday though"
He also told us that he's going to be growing his hair from now on. Errr, exactly how Alex? "At least to myshoulders!" he says with glee. Blimey! What with Howie and Kev, who's also growing their hair shoulder length, and now AJ too, we're getting a bit concerned they're going to turn into a right old bunch of rockers! Let's just hope Nick doesn't follow suit!
Fortunately Nick assures us that he's very fond of his short spikey locks at the mo, and indeed today he's just having a few little highlights put on the ends. Lovely!
(Main interview done before the EMAs)
Q: Which of the awards that you've been nominated for would you prefer to win? Best Pop act or Best Group?
N: It doesn't really matter what we win- it's just really great to be here and being able to perform live at the MTV Awards. We haven't been at the show for 3 years now, so it's just great to be back.
Q: If you guys win an award, do you get one each of just one to share?
N: Oh yeah, you never see it on TV but we all get our own award. We have had one we've had to share in the past, but we just take turns in having it at our homes! We've each got a room in our house dedicated to our awards and discs and stuff!
Q: Who made your brilliant stage outfits for the show?
B: The clothes are from a variety of different designers and it was actually an English stylist who put it all together for us.
He did our PITP outfits and we really liked him, so as we were coming over to do some press in England we thought he could tag along for the whole trip. He's great - he gets all diferent combinations from english and american designers - people who make one-off things and there's some cool stuff there, some new stuff in the fashion world and of course a lot of black and blue stuff to go with AJs hair - isn't it crazy?!
Q: When you're in Stockholm what do you get up to? Do you like to go out much?
K: Well Stockholm was the first European city we ever came to as a band to work with Max Martin and Deniz Pop, and we've been back 12 times now. When we're in town we usually go to Cafe Opera and the Spy Bar. So we do go out, we go shopping and hang out with Max - but we've made friends here so we go and visit them too, it's a lovely place, Stockholm.
Q: So who are you most excited about meeting at the Awards?
B: We've kinda been out of the loop recently and there's a lot of interesting new artists who've come out this year, so I'm really looking forward to mingling with everybody! But I'm also keen to meet Wyclef as I've never officially met him before and I saw him on a pre-awards show on MTV talking about us, and I've heard he's said he likes our stuff before, so it'd be great to meet him as I really like his stuff too!
Q: If you had to host the show, who would you like to be your co-presenter?
B: I think Madonna would be interesting or Janet Jackson. Someone like that I guess, although I don't know if I'd really like to have to hold the whole thing together myself!
Q: Why have you chosen a ballad as the first single from the album?
N: I wouldn't really call it a ballad. I think it's quite mid-tempo for us - I'd compare it to the likes of ALAYLM, QPG and IWITW, they are our biggest songs. If you listen to Metallica tehy sing rock songs, we sing mid-tempo, these are our signature songs!
Q: What would happen if one member decided to quit the band, wold there still be the BSB?
K: I don't know - that's a good question. I think we've always thought of us as a whole group, and if one of us decided to leave we'd all sit down and discuss the situation before we made any plans.
Q: Can you tell us why you're doing this huge around-the-world tour?
H: We decided a few months back that this would be a great idea. No-one has ever done it before and it was just different. I don't think people back home in america understood that the majority of our succeess was outside of the US before we were even known there - so we wanted to make sure we were doing a true world tour, so visiting 6 continents in 100 hours seemed a great idea.
Q: How are you going to cope with this world tour, and how will you enjoy your times in each country?
A: It's definitely the first time anyone has done anything like this, it's crazy but it's going to be fun. When we eventually arrive back in the US we're having a huge album launch party and we'll probably be out back fast asleep!
N: The plane is going to be pretty comfy - we'll just catch up on our sleep - but we're very excited about it!
Q: Are you trying to copy Westlife after their tour of England?
N: Oh not at all. We thought of this idea months ago and only found out about Westlife this morning.
K: The truth is that we're one of only a few groups that can actually take this opportunity up and do this right now. We are blessed with success all over the world and we haven't been back to Australia, or the Far East, since 1995 so we really are doing this for our fans. We certainly aren't trying to ourdo Westlife - we don't really know anything about these guys or their careers
Q: You've had some mjajor changes in your management. Will that change the work?
N: I think it's going to make us more professional and give us a better-controlled environment. If we kept on the way we were working I think we would have self-destructed. At the moment I think we're at a good level, and it's perfect for us and this is something we'll continue to do with The Firm.
H: I think it's all about having a proper balance with your life as well as a career, and The Firm really took grasp of that and gave us a chance to hae a career as well as a personal lfe.
Q: Would you like to work on solo projects?
N: I probably will, maybe some acting. I'd like to do an action movie, I've heard they are auditioning cast for Ghostbusters 3. I'd love to be in that. That'd be SO cool! Would I go for it now? No, we're too busy, it's not something I'd get into now, it'd be much later on in the future.
Q: What do you want to be doing in 10 years time?
K: I thik we'll still be doing something in the industry, whether it be performing or writing and producing, but who knows? In 10 years time, who says we won't still be together, at the moment we're just taking it day by day and album by album.
B: Hopefully I'll have a few kids with my beautiful wife and be blissfully happy!
(Another article in TVHits from the EMAs)
We've just landed in Stockholm when who should call but AJ! "All the boys have either gone out or to bed," he sighs, "Please come over and see me!" So off we troop over the river and into their plush 5 star hotel. We find our Alex hanging out in the bar with his mates Andre (their photographer) and Marcus his ever faithful bodyguard and mate.
Then we get all the latest goss!
AJ's just bought himself 2 new Scottie dogs, called Jack and Vegas, and he was sooo proud of them he couldn't wait to show us pics!
But he's also got another new pet - aSpider monkey called BJ (Bone Junior!) And it's no ordinary monkey, oh no, it's a film star! It was the monkey that starred in the Outbreak film. "I love that monkey" he gushes, "It's great, I go to the mall wearing the monkey and suddenly all these beautiful girls come round me. He's brilliant for pulling, heh heh!" Nothing to do with being in the biggest band on the planet then!
Apparently Nick's home now looks like a zoo too! "He's just bought himself a new bulldog, so he's got 5 dogs in total now!" laughs Alex.
AJ can't wait to tell us about the boys next tour. "It starts in January in the States, and will go on for a couple of months. But I'm hoping to bring Jonny No Name to Europe in May."
He then proceeds to talk to us for the next 10mins in a James Bond accent, even thought 'Johnny' was born in Nashville!
He's also very excited about the plans he's working on to build a new house. Not only will it have 13 rooms but it'll also have its own movie theatre, bowling alley, a giant swimming pool in the shape of a bone and loads more lovely things! In fact it's so impressive it won't actually be finished til 2002!
AJ's very excited abou the fact he's managing and producing his own artist, a right foxy lil laydee called Tracey, who's song quite literally blew us away!
A very excited Anastacia was introduced to AJ and the very first thing she asked was if the boys would like to record with her.
