Successful Crosses in 2002

An experienced hybridizer might look at the crosses I've made and quickly dismiss me as an unfocused amateur pollen dauber.  There's nothing but truth to this ;-)  I feel as if the only way I'm going to come up with something unique is to make a few wide TB crosses and just see what happens.   Monty Byers made several wide TB crosses and introduced some highly unusual cultivars. The highly controversial Thornbird was one of them that eventually won, to many people's dismay,   a Dykes Medal.  Now,  lets get something straight, I'm not crossing irises in hopes of one day winning a Dykes.  I'm just fascinated in the process and consider this to be a great hobby.  I do intend to introduce an iris or two over my life time, but I have to see if I can come up with anything I consider to be hardy with reliable rebloom or appendages for the colder zones.   Until then, I take it year by year and hope for the best.

Cross  CCommentsomments

Pinafore Pink x Wish
 Two nice garden pinks
Immortality ( RE ) x Cloudia ( SA )   Looking for a pink rebloomer with horns, unlikely since Immortality throws off whites ( 24 seedlings)
Stairway To Heaven x Sierra Grande  Two great bicolors
Hubble Space Telescope ( SA AB ) x Gambler  A wacky cross, no great expectations
Honky Tonk Blues X American Eagle Great expectations for this cross (16 seedlings)
Immortality ( RE ) x Wish  Hoping for a Pink rebloomer
Codicil x Cloudia ( SA )   ????  Looking for flounces and black beards
Clarance ( RE ) x Sierra Grande   High hopes for a beautiful rebloomer
Thornbird ( SA) x Wild Jasmine   Two  unique irises, many think they're ugly
Devonshire Cream x Holy Fire ( RE SA )   Can't miss with this cross of huge Sutton beauties
Pinafore Pink x Holy Fire ( RE SA )   I really liked the form of the  huge Pinafore pink, want more ruffles and flounces
Eagle's Landing ( SA ) x Sierra Grande  Grand Canyon Eagle, how's that for a SA seedling name ?  Only 1 seed germinated.
Thornbird ( SA ) x Bayberry Candle  A planned cross, really !  Maybe a future Dykes ;-)
Hubble Space Telescope ( SA AB ) x ?  Not sure about the ID of the pollen parent, pod has 85 seeds
Gnu Again x Momentous Occasion ( SA )  Ah yes, a broken color SA is on the way !
Hubble Space Telescope x Wild Jasmine  Hubble Space Telescope is nothing less than impressive, an awesome Space Age garden iris.  I just recently found out that mine was mislabeled as Howdy Do.  HST is an Arilbred.  Very interesting indeed.
