TheABCs of First Grade
The following section is very long and probably shouldn't be read all in one sitting, unless you'd just like to.  However, I wanted to provide you with all the information you may need in making First Grade a positive experience for your child. Please visit this page often when you have questions. I have tried to include information on everything a parent might like to know. If you have a suggestion for information that should be added,
please let me know by e-mail or note.

Attendance: First grade is a continuous experience with each day's learning built on the day before, and haphazard attendance will not benefit your child's learning experiences. If your child must be absent, be sure to send a note of explanation each time he/she is absent. A prolonged illness, as well as excused absences, require a doctor's excuse. Any child who has ten or more unexcused absences will be referred to a social worker.
Agendas:Your child will be given an agenda the first week of school. This notebook will be our main means of communication. I will correspond with you about your child's behavior through this book. You will find important information in the pocket of the agenda each day. You can also use it to record what your child did at school each day on the daily calendar. The agenda is very important. I communicate to my students that it is their responsibility each night to show the agenda to their parents and to bring it back to school each day. If the agenda is lost, it will need to be replaced for a fee of $10.00.
Acceptance: In our classroom, students will treat classmates and others with respect. All members of our classroom will feel special, because we will accept everyone regardless of the ways we are different.

Basic Skills: First grade is an extremely important year in your child's life. Here, the foundation for your child's school career will be laid. The basics of reading and mathematics will be taught and reinforced throughout First grade.
Being the Best Person: I hold high expectations for each and every student in my classroom. I expect and encourage my students to do their best in everything they do, whether writing a story or being a good friend.
Books: Our classroom has a wonderful selection of books for students of all reading levels. Students learn to read best by being surrounded by books. I hope that you will surround your child with good books at home.

Character Education: Loganville Primary School firmly believes in the education of young children to become people of good character. A new character quality is studied each week, while all qualities previously learned are put into practice. I incorporate as many of our character traits into everyday school situations in order to help the children grasp the concepts of these good character qualities. The character quality of the week will be written on your child's homework folder, so that you may discuss it with your child.
Conferences: Parent/Teacher conferences are held on early release days twice a year, October and March. During these conferences, we will be discussing your child's strengths and weaknesses, homework, behavior and any concerns you may have. It is essential to the success of your child for us to work together in order for your child to learn all that he/she can and to be ready for the next grade level, therefore, your attendance at these conferences is of high importance. I will send home a conference time request form, and will try my best to schedule you at one of your three requested times. After receiving the form (the first will be sent around the first of October), fill it out and send it back as quickly as possible. The time slots fill quickly.

Discipline: I do not anticipate many behavior problems. We will be very busy learning and having fun. However, if a child chooses to not follow the rules or directions given after receiving a warning, he or she will be asked to write his/her  name and explanation of what rule was broken in the "I Remember Book." You will receive a written notice inside the agenda of what happened and what action was taken. At the beginning of school, your child may bring home several behavior notes, because he/she may be testing limits. Understand that this is normal. Please discuss the rule(s) being broken, helping your child to understand that if the behavior continues, consequences will be given. In order for all children in our class to learn, they need rules and guidelines to follow. Without this structure, the behavior of some children may distract others, prohibiting them from learning. I'm sure you desire your child to become all he/she can be. With your support of our classroom discipline system, I will be better able to teach and help your child reach his/her potential.
Differentiated Instruction: All children are unique and special. Students in my class are at many different instructional levels. Because I feel it is my responsibility to take each child from where he or she is to a higher level, students may be learning concepts different from his/her peers. We will not all be on the same page in the same book. With this type of teaching in the classroom, you can be sure that your child's individual needs will be met.
Donations: We are very lucky to have an administration that provides us with most of the supplies we neeed. However, there will be times that I may need some items for the classroom. I would appreciate anyone who will be willing to send in donations.

Enrichment: Those students performing above grade level in any subject, will be given opportunities to strengthen their understanding of concepts. Reading chapter books, researching a topic, book reports, and projects are a few of the many enrichment activities that may be provided for those who need a little extra.

Family: It is very important to me that the children and myself come together as a big family. We work together, play together, learn together, eat together, and much more. From the start, I encourage the children to respect, love, and take care of each other. With our classroom family, there are no limits to our accomplishments.
Field Trips: We will be taking at least two field trips this year. We have not decided where these will be taking place. We will be purchasing class shirts to wear on these field trips as well as field day. Parents are also welcome to purchase a shirt for themselves. When a field trip form is sent home, please try to return it the next day, if possible. I have had to leave several children behind in other classrooms, because a permission slip was not returned. Chaperones will be chosen on a first come basis.
Fund Raisers: Our school participates in several fund raisers to provide the school with necessary equipment such as computers and technology. We hope that everyone will participate. When the fundraiser orders come in, we will notify you so that if you have a large order, you can come to the classroom to pick it up. It is often difficult or impossible for the children to carry the order home on the bus.

Grading: Assessment of student learning is very important in order to find out where students are successful and where they may need some extra assistance. The following grades will be taken each week and will be used to calculate final grades for each progress report and report card period:
Language Arts:
1. Reading Ticket - If completed every day, student will receive a grade of 100. If activities are not completed, a percentage will be calculated. The parents of those students having difficulty completing the Reading Ticket after several weeks of school will be notified, and we will meet to discuss strategies to help the child.
2. Phonics Assessment
3. Spelling Tests
4. Reading Assessment
5. Homework - Those who have turned in and completed homework will receive a grade of 100 in Language Arts. Those who do not turn in homework will receive a grade of O.
Math
1. Practice pages - 2 a week.
2. Arithmetic Developed Daily Assessment
3. Homework - Those who have turned in and completed homework will receive a grade of 100 in Math. Those who do not turn in homework will receive a grade of O.
4. Chapter Tests - Students will not have a chapter test each week. However, grades from the chapter tests will be figured into the final grade.
My grading system will be further explained at a parent night held shortly after school begins.

Homework: Each student will have a homework folder with a homework ticket inside. This homework ticket is a sort of contract listing all the homework assignments for the week. You and your child may use it to check off when each assignment is complete. The homework folder will be sent home each Monday full of the assignments for the week. You and your child may complete the activities on the nights most convenient for you. as long as all the assignments are completed by Friday. The homework folder must be returned on Friday to receive credit. Please do not send in homework early. I would like for everyone to return their homework folders on Friday.
Hands - On Activities: Many times I hear others say to children, "Kindergarten was fun, but now it's time for real school. You're going to have to straighten up and get ready for a lot of work." I am quite saddened by this remark. My first grade classroom will be run the same way my Kindergarten classroom was, only the concepts to be learned will be more difficult. I feel that the best way to help children learn is to make learning fun. Important concepts can be learned by doing meaningful hands-on activities. I am not the kind of teacher that assigns seat work for the majority of the day. I like to provide children various experiences where they are able to make choices about their learning. There are times that seat work is required and necessary, but for the most part, our classroom will be an active learning environment.
Hugs - BEWARE! Mrs. Broome loves to hug on her students (only if they wish). Before long, these hugs become contagious and everyone loves to hug their classmates.

Ice Cream: Students can buy ice cream for 50 cents a day. Please note that we do not receive ice cream on days we do not go out to recess. Ice cream may also be witheld from a student who has not followed the rules of the classroom that day. Ice cream money is credited on days such as these. Please send ice cream money in an envelope labeled "Ice Cream Money" along with your child's name. Ice cream money must not be sent to school in the same envelope or check as lunch money. Lunch money and ice cream money are sent to separate places and it is impossible to split the money in the classroom.

Journals: Each day students write in their journals. Students use concepts they've learned in phonics and reading instruction in their own writing. I would encourage you to have your child write in a journal at home, about thoughts, feeling or ideas that he/she may have. I use journals to teach important concepts of spelling, sight words, sentence structure, punctuation, and other skills.
abcdefg
Kindness: Students in my classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Hitting, fighting, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be tolerated.
abcdefg
Lunch: Students may eat lunch in the lunchroom or bring their lunch to school. Lunch costs $1.25 per day. When sending your child's lunch money to school, please label it with your child's name, what it is for "lunch money", and your child's lunch account number. Please do not mix lunch money with other money such as ice cream. These monies go to different places and are unable to be separated in the classroom. We would love for you to visit us for lunch. We eat at. Please do not bring lunch from McDonald's or any other restaurant to share with your child. We want to be fair to all children.
Lessons: The lessons planned for each day are taught in a variety of different ways and group arrangements. Some are taught as a large group, others take place in smaller groups. Some activiities are student led, as they choose the skils to work on.
Laughter: Laughter is an important part of our classroom. Laughter is good for everyone and helps learning blossom and grow. Students are not expected to be perfect, but understand that everyone makes mistakes and learns by trying new things and being able to laugh and learn from their mistakes.

Money: All money that is sent to school is sent straight to the office. I am unable to make change. Please remember when sending in money to school, pleaseplace it in an envelope and label it with your child's name and what it is to be used for. Many times I have to return money because it is not in an envelope and the child has no idea what the money is for.
Music: Music is a very important part of our classroom. I firmly believe that children can learn important facts through song. We will learn a variety of fun, educational songs.
Mathmatics: We will be learning from a new Mathmatics series this year. Students will come to deeply understand the meaning behind addition and subtraction, problems solving, and other skills. Students will be instructed in math each day. Just as sight words are important to reading, reciting addition and subtraction facts are equally important to achieve success in math. Please drill your child on these using flashcards or timed tests.
