Cricket is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. It is a bat-and-ball game played on a roughly elliptical grass field, in the centre of which is a hard, flat strip of ground 22 yards (20.12 m) long, called the pitch.

England has been one of the most dominant teams in international cricket, fielding a strong side for most of cricket's history. This dominance began to fall away in the 1980s as England was overshadowed by Australia, the West Indies, India, Pakistan and South Africa. Since 2000, English cricket has seen a resurgence and the team is now ranked second after Australia.

England played in the very first Test match in 1877.

Football (soccer)

The first set of rules resembling the modern game were produced at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1848, at a meeting attended by representatives from Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester and Shrewsbury, but they were far from universally adopted. During the 1850s, many clubs were formed, thoughout the English-speaking world, independent of schools or universities, to play various forms of football.

David Beckham is a famous English footballer, widely regarded as THE most well-known face in the sport. Beckham shot to fame (no pun intended) on the Manchester United team. He currently plays for Real Madrid in Spain. [More on David Beckham ]

The term football is defined in two ways: the first is literally "foot ball" or the action of a foot kicking a ball. The other explanation is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe played on foot by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports played by aristocrats.
