WHERE TO WATCH

CHEW VALLEY LAKE

Chew Valley Lake is the largest of the three reservoirs situated just to the south of the city and is Bristol’s premier inland site for birds. The lake is owned and managed by Bristol Water plc covers over 1,200 acres and has rich bank-side vegetation, reed-beds and woodland habitats.

The lake regularly attracts a wide variety of wildfowl and waders and there is always a large presence of gulls on the lake, especially in winter.

The sheer size of the lake means that even estuarine species such as Divers and Scoters turn up here and sometimes also storm-driven seabirds though these are very much local rarities.

There are many public vantage points around the lake plus dedicated bird hides along private tracks. Permits are required to use the hides and these are available from the Woodford Lodge reception centre.
